Teams & Riders Nairo Quintana discussion thread

Quintana tend to be a beast in the third week. I don't think he will lose the podium.

But it's not looking good for Valverde if (or more like when) the youngsters go all in tomorrow.

Last time Quintana fit that definition would be 2015. He was worse in the 3rd week of last year's Vuelta than Valverde was. What he did today more likely cost Movistar everything than anything. If Valverde doesn't get his record breaking podium at la Vuelta, I will put full and complete blame squarely on Quintana. That is an unforgivable act.

I also think that if all efforts by Movistar would have gone to Valverde, he could be in a much better position to win La Vuelta.
Soler and Quintana should have worked for Valverde, but maybe it was difficult to see it from the beginning.
Quintana is a very selfish rider and when the team director (Unzué) says that the road will place everyine in his place, he knows that, if he attacks early and gets himself agead in the GQ, he will be favoured by the team's tactics.

It is not the first time this happened.

Then after a few stages, he loses gas and cannot handle the position, but it is late/difficult for the team to position Valverde in a better position.

Everybody in Movistar is dying for the season to finish, see Quintana departure and start all over again making things with common sense, but that is also a big IF, as Unzué has already proven that he is a tool in making this team work together and planning things. Too big a thing for him. It is time for the team to go in another direction. But he is friends with most of the journalists and it is difficult for the owners of the team to reach a decision...

Team comp yes, but for Valverde's record breaking podium it hurts.
Bulldust. Having Quintana (and to a lesser extent Kelderman and Knox) in the break was what forced the hands of Jumbo, Astana etc. The Jumbo domestiques - especially Bennett and Martin - are now running on empty while Astana had to do a ton of work.

Last thing they want is to have both Quintana and Valverde back in contention. Movistar as a whole nailed it today.

This is a lie. In this Vuelta Valverde have not lost nothing because of Quintana. He has always either been in front or benefited from tactics. And that's how coaches see it and that's way they play with this strategy. Team always fight to have at least two riders in contention because they are more likely to benefit from it. Besides Valverde always love to be on wheels of others and usually benefits from it. Sunday's performance was very surprising knowing his modus operandis.

As a last note, I see that Valverde fans only come to this thread to trash Quintana for any reason. If he doesn't attack he is trashed. If he attacks he is trashed. If he shows good race awareness he is trashed. etc, etc..

Quintana continues to lose time in the mountains, so now Lopez and Pogacar are going to want to attack from even further out, which is bad news for a NON pure climber like Valverde.

How?

By forcing Astana and Jumbo to ride themselves inside out?

By giving his team another serious option to work over Roglic?

It seems Quintana can't even wipe his backside without getting on your bad side.

Roglic still has over 2 minutes in the lead and the only real way he'll lose that is via a crash (which I'd prefer to not see). Also Roglic's best mountain dom (Kuss) was in the group that finished 20 or so minutes down. Thus he should be fine for tomorrow's stage.

Quintana should not be attacking his team leader.

As Quintana also LOST 10 seconds on the uphill drag at the end of today's stage, doesn't show he'll be of any use in the mountains tomorrow anyway.

If Quintana is guaranteed to lose time in the mountains then Lopez and Pogacar only need to focus Roglic and Valverde.

You talk about Quintana attacking, but nothing about the THREE TEAMMATES he followed into the break. Did they attack Valverde?

If you're on the wheel of three teammates, and the peloton splits (which is what ACTUALLY happened) , WTF should be done? Movistar turned DQSs ambush into a win today.

As for losing 10 seconds at the end of a stage where you've just gained minutes...

Pacify Quintana ego. Those 3 teammates otherwise would have been there to either try to win the stage (Rojas can sprint) but more likely for the team classification.

The fact he LOST time at the end, shows he was starting to struggle.

At least Quintana is finally gone at the end of the year. The fact he's going to a Pro Conti team next year also speaks volumes.

Not when Quintana should just lose time again tomorrow. Quintana SHOULD have been there to help Valverde not to ride in opposition to him.
Best case scenario tomorrow is for Quintana to drop early and lose time due to what he did today.
Really, stop it. You sound like sour grapes.
If Quintana was not in the break none of this would have happened, you realize that don't you?
