National Championships 2018

Cyclocrossers dominated the age group categories in Ireland.

Darnell Moore, who is 21, won the U23 men’s RR. He is already men’s elite national cyclocross champion. Lara Gillespie won the Junior women’s RR. She is already women’s elite national cyclocross champion, winning that title in January when she was still 16(!). Gillespie is by all accounts an athletic standout - one of those kids who is great at every sport at junior level, from football to cross country running.

Maybe cross is the new track, breeding ground of road champions.

Bora will be very pleased with the nationals. They like to push their German identity, as is only sensible given how big a market Germany is. They have also established themselves as the home of the majority of promising Austrian cyclists. So winning the German and Austrian RRs, as well as the almost guaranteed Slovakian jersey, is useful.

I’m particularly glad that Postlberger won. Both because he will be at the Tour and the jersey will be visible and because he’s a guy who had to fight his way to the pro ranks the hard way. He was never a hyped talent and was never anyone’s prized and protected development project. He got noticed by Bora by traveling around Europe on the Conti circuit, winning windy and tough rouleur’s races. Since he got his contract he has continued to up his game and now he’s a Giro stage winner and will be riding the Tour in his national jersey. I will always cheer for guys like this.

Is this likely to be a straightforward Moscon win?
Yeah, Ganna isn't in great shape atm, maybe we'll get an actual fight for the jersey next year (if he really signs with Sky).

Seems Ganna was only 2 seconds off in the end.
Yes, a pleasant surprise.
Ganna cracked at the end, but at the 2nd time check he was actually 19 seconds ahead of Moscon.
After the race he confirmed in an interview that he and Moscon will ride for the same team in 2019.
