Good article, but I'm not so sure it's an authentic "rags to riches" story until Darnold can win a playoff game. I consider last year a big disappointment going 14-3 with one of the best records in the league but experiencing an early exit out of postseason where they were favorites over LAR. Sure, Darnold had a phenominal season statistically (a far cry from all the picks he threw at NYJ stating he was "seeing ghosts"), but I think all those impressive stats & great regular season are meaningless when you can't even win one playoff game. Mayfield is also mentioned as a "rags to riches" story, but he's won a playoff game at TB & also had won one when he was at Cleveland (a lot of people forget about that). Being a #1 OA & with several years in the league, it's time for Mayfield to go deeper in the playoffs setting sights on the SB.
So, what are the expectations for Darnold at Seattle? Winning record & just make the playoffs? Win a playoff game? A deep playoff run? SB title? He's a #3 OA pick making decent money now. Time to rise to the occasion & do something more than an just an early exit out of the postseason.
On Zach, I think he is seen as nothing more than a backup upgrade...at least right now. McDaniel was very disappointed with Skylar Thompson going 1-3 in that span where Tua went on IR (what do you expect coach with a low-drafted QB who was a marginal prospect to even make it as a backup. Lol). Certainly Zach is a better QB than Thompson, but I don't think McDaniel is entertaining any thoughts of opening up QB competition between the two unlike what Indy is going to do with AR & Danny Jones. But if Tua were to get hurt again missing some time, then Zach would have his opportunity to prove himself.
Pickett, IMO, should be given a chance to compete for the starting job at Cleveland (right now it's just him & Watson on the depth chart). In 3 seasons as a pro, he's only had 24 starts where he went a respectable 14-10. He's got an above-average arm, decent size & good athleticism where he's listed as a "mobile pocket passer." Granted, he needs to grow up & not be publicly second guessing his HC's decisions, but I fail to understand why this 1st rounder isn't given a chance to start again?
Sam Howell is a little bit of a mystery to me as to where he goes with his career? Though only a 5th rd pick, he was initially projected as a mid-2nd with a 6.2 rating ("Will eventually become average starter"). His scouting report says he has a powerful arm that can effortlessly make all the NFL throws including deep balls into tight windows. Though undersized in the height dept, he's athletic & mobile having been a dual-threat QB at North Carolina. But his full year of starting at Wash was anything but average...it was downright disastrous! (4-13 record with 21 picks & a 78 passer rating!). Has that disastrous season blacklisted him where no team thinks they can develop him into a starter?
