Rypien has been signed to the practice squad. He was unable to beat out Jeff Driskel, who will be the backup. One thing that hurt Rypien was the loss of OC Rich Scangarello who was replaced by Pat Shurmur. Scangarello was a big supporter of Rypien and liked the way he fit in with his offensive scheme. But Shurmur is running a different scheme that he feels better suits Driskel (for now anyway).

Niners drafted Driskel in the late rounds but got rid of him too quick I thought. I think he could have made a decent back up. At the moment though I would probably rate Mullens a bit higher who hasn't played since Jimmy G returned from his ACL injury.

Hi Guys. :)
I think this is the year for Bills or Dolphins. Patriots have lost a lot and haven't replaced it besides with Newton. Receivers are still lethargic but saving grace for them is Newton is mobile so can open things up for them.
Have the Pats even named Cam as the starter? I agree this is a year the Bills should win the division, and be pretty good. The Fins should improve too.
Rosen to the Bucs...that is probably the best possible fit for Josh, and maybe his last real shot.
Agree. Good post.

Here are some predictions for the season. Fessing up that I have been too busy with life to pay as close of attention as I have in recent years. So some of these predictions may seem ill informed ramblings of a madman. o_O

Super bowl: Baltimore Ravens beat the New Orleans Saints
MVP: Patrick Mahomes
DPOY: Nick Bosa
ROY: Joe Burrow

Some other blind squirrel guesses:

The Colts could actually be quite good, like, deep playoff good. That division is weak, and they made improvements on both sides of the ball. The only question is if Rivers still has it. If he does, they could contend for the AFC.

You'd think the same rule applies to Dallas, but I am not sure about them. I just don't trust a Jerry Jones led team to get that far anymore. Same with Mike McCarthey.

The Bills are stacked, and this will be a year we'll either see Josh Allen lead them to a division crown and playoff win(s), or just a career as an average QB with a really strong arm.

Mahomes (and Reid) are too good for the Chiefs to have a real let-down year like many SB winners. But teams will be gunning for them, and while I think they'll win their division, I don't see them repeating.

Green Bay
and Aaron Rodgers will look really good, and regret not drafting a WR.

Washington will be the worst team in the league, and about 6 games in or so have another near crisis at coach, and QB.

I said this one before. If Mayfield doesn't look like an above average QB, and cut down his mistakes by about week 8, don't be surprised if Case Keenum ends up Cleveland's QB, and Mayfield is gone from Cleveland next year.

Tampa doesn't have the full team, or a young Tom Brady, to compete in that division against New Orleans, and Atlanta. Granted, the Falcons have had a very talented roster and managed to lose several games they should have won.

The Patriots, and Raiders, will both go 8-8.

The first two weeks will be a poor indicator of the season. Teams supposed to look great will look lousy, and vice-versa.

I'm wondering how the first few weeks will be. I've been complaining for several/many years that the quality of football from too many teams is crap until mid Oct., and this year only promises to be worse.

I'm also wondering WHEN Covid-19 will influence the season. How the NFL deals with positive tests, and how much it spreads through teams may determine the outcome of the season. Pretty much every year success can be determined by the best team who avoids serious injuries, but this year pile on top of that the team who avoids C19 the best. This may mean a vet heavy roster has better chances.

I agree with many of Alpe's ramblings, but doubt that he can unseat me as a madman! :)

Really looking forward to the new season, I managed to catch a couple of the college games last weekend to wet the appetite.

I agree with the general consensus that there could be a few shocks in the opening week or two, but eventually the cream should rise to the top.

Don't agree with much of that including the SB forecast but it was an interesting read ! Bills should be good, Dallas I don't trust, The Colts should improve. I'm not sold on the Ravens or Saints really. I wouldn't be surprised if the SB was a replay of last year but the Niners have more querstions than the Chiefs I guess. Although both rosters have hardly changed. Don't see it happening for GB. The Browns are like the Cowboys you just can't predict it. I think Tampa is being a little overrated. For me they either make the playoffs or just miss but I don't see them getting to the conference final. Ravens have not won a playoff game with Lamar so the pressure is on him as the reigning MVP and even more so with Dak and Baker to at least make the playoffs. I put the Patriots in the same category as the Buccs, not sold on Cam or the overall team.

Agree with that. As for KC, they appear less likely to be headed for a letdown, but I'm curious how losing two OL guys to c19 opt-outs (starting RG Tardiff, & Niang) will effect the offense. The upside is they did bring in Osemele, & it may not matter much for a QB like Mahomes. They also lost a good RB in Williams to opt out, but that should not hurt much.

As for Cleveland, except for the QB position, they have a very good team. The big question to me is how this new coaching staff (HC Stefanski formerly the Viks OC, DC Joe Woods formerly the SF DB & pass game coordinator, who has a 26 year NFL coaching resume) can improve the results columns. So, this could be, and maybe should be, Baker Mayfield's best chance to break out, or get the team over the hump and into playoffs, that he's ever had in Cleveland. While Baker is not even close to Mahomes or Wilson, Baltimore won a SB with an average QB in Dilfer. NOT at all saying Cleveland will make it to the SB, just to be clear haha.

17-7 KC. Texans look like they're picking up where they left off from last years playoff game. Collisnworth keeps saying without Hopkins the Chiefs defense won't know who to focus on but neither does the offense seem to know either right now. Chiefs are also playing fast and short and slow and long with drives.

The Chargers just announced for the balance of the season that a random defensive lineman will be selected to kick field goals and extra points to improve performance, kick offs for the Chargers will be done by anybody wearing the opposing team's jersey and holding any kind of cardboard sign!!
The regular kicker will spend every other snap kicking,as hard as humanly possible a person on the coaching staff..because it's just starting offensive and defensive coordinato rs first
