today's Nibali is the real Nibali , a mediocre but smart rider who got some GT wins beating nobody.

I would have no problem with that if he would be less cocky with "mother of imbecile" and "symbol of clean sport" stuff.

Who also caught an enormous break in the TDF, with ALL the other top riders in the race going down.

Like I said before, a fluke win, by a guy who will never win much again IMO.

He already won pretty much, probably "by fluke" also..

I meant TDF wise...he's done. When it comes out in a few years that he was doping, he'll be a non winner.

i would not put money on him being a non winner. Look at everyone bar Armstrong.............

The numbers don't agree. The Nibali of last year was clearly a match for the top riders in most recent additions. However, currently he seems to have cracked mentally. That's what Birdsong and a various rumblings from the Astana camp have seemed to suggest

He could be riding (relatively) clean this year, it could be due to the crash or maybe he just messed up his training. I guess we'll never know. Maybe he's just had enough of it all; he's seemed pretty tetchy in interviews recently.t

Fuglsang said to reporters that he felt like he was looking at a man who had just given up when he tried to spur Nibbles on today. Ended up just riding away and finishing a minute and a half ahead of his captain, which also tells a story. Nibali isn't really in this race, and he doesn't need the courtesy of being pulled to the line by his mates.

these men are professional athletes paid a lot of money to race their bikes and win
they do it year in year out

the idea that they got something wrong this time around is again

they are surrounded by many experts, consultants and advisors to make sure they are performing optimally for the biggest cycling event of the year

I suspect a deal was made that Astana were not to go ballistic at the TdF and they get to keep their licence. Whether the riders were told or only team management, we'll have to hope someone blows the whistle on that one.

Could be night time testing, but we only know of one team, IIRC, that were tested around 11pm and only riders.

this is pro cycling, could be lots of things and most of them unnnatural.

According again to tuttobiciweb (http://www.tuttobiciweb.it/index.php?page=news&cod=80948&tp=n) , only 3 guys were tested after the nationals : top 2 (Nibali, Reda) + a random guy ( Zilioli ).
Someone 's protecting Vincenzo? This could also explain why he is so nervous at the tour and why is not performing like last year. Maybe he knew he failed a test and wasn't sure if he was covered.

Of course could also be a mistake from the site. Gazzetta only reported one failed test but Tuttobiciweb is by far the best italian cycling website, and they first report the news!

Its also a mental thing. Last year he knew he was the best after Froome/Contador were gone.

This year he is worse and several riders are just better as well compared to last year.

That isnt easy to accept for Vicenzo.
