Mattis Stenshagen with a solid opening bid for inclusion in the Norwegian world's team, and my favorite Victoria Carl looking very strong! Victoria is my pick to step it up another level this year. I'm biased of course; my favorite group to follow is the German women, very easy to root for! :)

So Karlsson is most likely back already to the national opening. She will test on snow next week when she is back from Teide but she is already pushing hard on roller skis.

On the other hand Skistad could be gone until mid-January according to the latest reports from the Norwegian team.

Curious how every season at least one Norwegian woman has some sort of issue that prevents her from competing in the World Cup.

Saw her double poling with rollerskis on a main road almost 2 weeks ago. I found it odd that a Biathlete would do specific double poling training shortly before the season starts.
Double poling has a lot of similarities with V2 skating when it comes to movement and muscle use in the upper body, so it does makes sense for biathletes to have specific DP sessions to unburden the legs in heavy training periods. Opposite the ski classic guys goes (V2)skating and not classic with grip when they want to train with a lower load on the upper body.

I guess, Triceps, abs + lower back (core), just the balance component lacks a bit.
Yeah, you're right about the ski classics guys, with the current technique zone they actually do better in skating races vs the world cup athletes.

The incredible amount of quality xc Skiers in Norway never fails to amaze me. Vermeulen at 78, crazy.
These early season Norwegian (and Swedish to an extent) races should really serve as a reality check for any skier hovering around the 30s or so in the world cup. At that level, there must be (guessing) at least 50-100 skiers left at home who could beat that placing any given day, who will never get so much as a sniff of a world cup start. This is what happens when you get an entire culture revolving around Nordic skiing, with access to incredible technique coaching, training knowledge, world class trails, and community and club support available to everyone. Crazy.

Wonder why it is not more common for Norwegians to skip nationalities to be able to Compete.

Norway is a pretty awesome country; that place would be a very hard one to leave just for skiing I would think.... I guess it would depend on whether or not a skier considered World Cup/Olympics the be all and end all of skiing considering between Ski Classics and Scandinavian cup a solid skier could have a pretty rewarding career. Who knows, I'm just an older guy now and don't profess to have insight into the heads of young Norwegian ski racers! :p

Well, skipping nationalities would not mean that they have to leave Norway. Just race under a different flag. It happens a lot in other sports. So why not for Norwegian xc skier?

Competitive Russian cup, Korostelev (two time Junior world champion from 2022, who only turns 21 on November 30th) won the 15km classic. An 18 year old (just turned 18) finished 5th, beating Bolshunov in the process.

Damn, all those Russians are losing their third season already. What a *** tragedy for them. Crazy that they are robbed in a way that did not even happen during the Cold War. Must be so tough to keep their motivation up.
I *** hate the IOC and FIS.

There’s a few norwegians with a second passport competing for other nations such as Maloney Westgaard for Ireland, Einarson for Iceland, Fodstad for Colombia and in Biathlon Lie for Belgium.

I dont know how easy it is to get a citizenship in another country without even living there.

I am more surprised that so few skiers from other countries move to Norway and train with the best.

Well they can't just randomly decide to race for another country though, correct? Unless they have parents with dual citizenship wouldn't they have to give up their Norwegian citizenship and actually become a citizen of another country? I'm not privy to how that process would work so I accept I could be talking out of my a**; I understand lots of people train in lots of different places but unless I'm missing something it seems like a non-trivial thing to do?

It's got to be killing someone like Bolshunov, watching so many of the prime years of his international career just going up in smoke. I loved watching the Russians in the mix; the racing is not the same without them.
