Remarkable amount of falls without obvious contact though, it was like Strandvall days of crashes but for the most part people went down on their own. The two in the start gate, plus Diggins and Sundling both losing it on the uphill, odd to see so many. A lot of people also ran wide on the corner Ogden crashed coming out of although his was actually a coming-together.

According to Cologna it can happen on icy snow if the angle of your poles is off.

Karlsson getting a scratch on her face and her glasses (thank god she was wearing them) from Diggins with her poles in their quarterfinal. Now of course it was a racing incident and Karlsson has done similar things before, but moving around the track when your you working out of your legs and your poles are up can be dangerous for the person behind you.

Diggins and Karlsson have a bit of a history. They are both aggressive skiers and Karlsson likes to ski very close to the skiers around her. In classic races her skis are always on top of the skis of a skier in front of her. Also, remember what she did to Stupak (then Belorukova) in the Quebec sprint in March 2019? Stupak was coming on to Karlsson’s right, making a move to pass her and Karlsson swings her right pole, clearly in the hope of blocking Stupak and Stupak not put hands up to block the pole, she would have been hit. Stupak then proceeded to retaliate. Now, I don’t condone Stupak’s retaliation, but the anger and frustration is understandable. Not only is it cheap to block skiers swinging your poles, especially evident in that incident, you can see Karlsson changing direction of the pole, and the pole come us up several times, it’s very dangerous.

I don't really follow the news in the nordic combined, is there a reason Hansen has went from total domination to losing the last few races?

Laukli is very light on her feet on the climbs, gets her weight transferred very dynamically. Turnover reminiscent of Johaug a bit, at least to me.

edit: and clearly on a great day today.

Yeah, that's why I said that Karlsson herself has a history of doing similar things, even if she has calmed a bit over the last 1-2 seasons.

Hard to get away on such a lap with fast conditions.
Yeah but with the hard last part of the lap it was obvious that the gaps would come at the end when the big guns put the hammer down.

In the men’s race I think we can expect a big group together after 17 km, but the ones outside top 10 that are just barely hanging on will have no chance in those last 2,8 km.

I don’t see Krista continuing her career if she continues to have sub par results this season. A podium would do her a world of good, but she’s nowhere near the level required for that to happen.

Fast, hard packed snow, skate, and the Swedes not pulling away. There was (mostly) one way this race would go. Karlsson is a more than capable sprinter but for some reason doesn’t often have a punch at the end of a distance race when she’s on a mass start.

Me as well. She was already wrestling with continuing and this season I fear might be the proverbial nail in the coffin; one of my favorites.

Yeah it’s a shame. She’s always been there or thereabouts, since she started her World Cup career. Her classic technique is world class. For someone that’s not very tall she gets a lot of glide and she’s solid as a rock at her best. I think after the 2022 Olympics where she skied well, got a medal, her results have generally been underwhelming. She’s has some good results but mostly mediocre, by her standards.

The Finns could be in some trouble when she and Niskanen retire. Kähärä hasn’t yet made a big breakthrough, and Matintalo and Joenssu haven’t gotten on the podium, yet.

The way Diggins is selling after a race I can see her having a career in pro wrestling after she stops skiing.

Good course but difficult to ski away in the conditions, it is supposed to warm up for the men's race so maybe a different kind of race?

Liliane Gagnon is a name for the future, never heard of her before today.

Parmakoski said that Alpe Cemis would be the last time in her career this season, i think she knows it's all over. Time for the next chapter in her life.

I guess maybe, even if these conditions would be interesting for someone like Anger (and even Barp, who is bad when it comes to uphill V1 technique).

I never saw Gagnon as one of the top u23 talents, but good performance by her, even if the conditions probably helped her a bit.

The domination is crazy, after 15 min you already know there's only going to be one winner to this race and nothing has even happened yet

That was some proper racing. The first three laps went steadily fast, with decent skiers struggling at the back. Then Kruger really put the hammer down on the last loop, he’s pretty damn amazing when he decides to give it a go over a longer distance.

Klæbo back in good form. It says a lot when no one else is anywhere near keeping up with Krueger and he does it while looking pretty comfortable.

It’s a sign of a though race when Lapierre can drop Amundsen and Golberg in the last climb. Great result for him.

Very impressed also by Barp. He’s gonna be a key player the next 10 years!

Fast conditions and certain courses help Barp. According to himself his uphill v1 is still lacking. His top speed, classic skiing in general and his v2 are already really good.
Now if Graz also manages to stay healthy Italy might have a good relay team.
