Given how lacklustre Karlsson was compared to her previous races, Andersson's second crash ruined what could have been a great battle for gold. Those who just wanted the big favourites Sweden to lose no matter what can be happy, but in reality we just got a different team sauntering away to win unbothered.

Pretty much this.

No miracles from Diggins today.

Socially akward and pretty neurotic, but imo there is no ill intent or putting on a show.
Which is why the hate to me seems so unwarranted. In fact, it makes me like her even more. Her first Olympic gold after having played second/third fiddle so many times is well deserved.

Hoping for a Swedish team downfall makes total sense, even though reveling and being stoked in the way it happened leaves a sour taste in my mouth as a Swedish national.

Fosnaes is probably just dancing because she's relieved sfter the stunt he pulled last year.
Clearly Norway us much better without Johaug in the relay...

Sweden crashed and Ebba probably feels horrible, but Switzerland is probably the biggest looser of the day.

GErmany had horrible classic skis, zero grip.

It's not a rational thing, some people you just instinctively dislike.

Ryytty did so well that not even Joensuu could blow it. She was obviously overpowered by Sundling, but for a sprinter that was some sucking appallingly on the downhills.

True. Cheering a crash though.. nah, I probably would have cheered a prime Northug crash.

This was all Ebba's own doing though, can't really blame anyone else. She totally panicked and a large part of why is Astrid was chasing her like a rabid dog. Fair play to AØS as well, the real MVP.

Even without the crash Ebba didn't look to me like she was on an A+ day anyway.

Anyone who has ski raced knows how sketchy it was out there today for both classic and skate.

Behle said that Sweden was to blame as well for not having any service men in a crucial position like this, but I honestly didn't see if others had. And no idea if it would have changed the outcome. Probably not. Norway looked solid enough to defend even half a minute or so.

Looking at the split times, Sweden had the fastest splits on all but Ebba's leg (obviously), to the tune of 36 seconds over the 3 other legs; without Ebba's crash it's doubtful it would have been all that close based on that. Astrid was good but her split was actually 17 seconds slower than Fosnaes; doubtful she was going to put 36+ seconds into Ebba today.

Aside from a disastrous opener from Gimmler the Germans were actually quite solid; guess I'm not as dumb as I look after all. Definitely were missing Victoria Carl here.

Nadja Kaelin had the 2nd fastest split of the 2nd leg classic skiers, then hands off to Marina who promptly skis the 10th fastest skate on the 3rd leg. Ouch.

5th for the US was as good as they were going to get here, but at least they got that.

Interesting reading for anyone so inclined:

Snowing and misty in Antholz. Hardest conditions of the Games so far, I imagine we will see some more misses than in other races, maybe even a non-French win (dreaming here)

That's what it seemed like a few in the thread did, but I admit that I might have been blinded by my own bias. Cheering on the downfall of the Swedish team does not mean that they necessarily loved the way it occured. Also, the gloating was occuring before the second and biggest crash.

It must be said though: Emma Ribom crying to the media that the Norwegians celebrated too much at the finish line, what a joke. They won an Olympic gold, are they supposed to just be stoic? Like a home run trot? What nonsense.

Dont remember Sweden being quiet when they won due to Norway waxing cockup.

Ebba fell 3 years ago in the Planica Skiathlon (which she won…) in similar conditions and similar type of downhill. She is obviously a world class athlete, one of the best in the world for years now, but I think she is not the best downhill skier. It’s also bad luck, anything can happen in soft conditions on a faster, more technical downhill. Unfortunately it is part of the game, as they say. For her to crash a second time and a lose a ski, is something else. Reminds me of Gafarov in the semifinals of the 2014 Olympic sprint, but he was never going to recover during that race, obviously.

It’s an excellent close by Karlsson an Sundling, to manage a strong and valiant silver. I hope Ebba can recover mentally and perhaps get gold in the 50km. That would be appropriate, IMO.

That is putting it mildly. I remember several times when she either fell or almost fell in races and she always looks extremely uncomfortable in difficult downhills. Today she fell once and it's almost impossible to ski downhill if you're as terrified as she looked after that.
