Good news for all parties that the Gee saga is finally sorted. We'll maybe never know the figure that Gee had to pay, but something commonsensical was obviously sorted out. I wonder if anyone will take him for their CQ team.

Not mindblowing incoming transfers today, but what can you expect at this time of the year. Still one spot left of course.....
Smith looked an interesting prospect ten (!) years ago at Hincapie, now he's just an experienced helper.
They talk Tene's sprinting up in the article, but I see him more as part of a train for Koggy or maybe getting his own chance on slightly lumpier days. It was a bit of a toss-up between him and Kretshcy for this spot I feel. I might have gone for the German.

No sign of the devo squad on the initial list of invited teams to l'Avenir. Mind you there's no Groupama or Decathlon either.

Missing out wouldn't be totally unfair. The twenty man squad has 5 over aged riders and 8 first years and then from the remaining 7 there's nobody that really screams out as a must invite rider.
They still could get in of course with some early season results to bolster their chances.

Interview with the boss of the devo junior team (Team Tiepolo).
One of the things he explains is why the team is now Austrian registered. It's because the current Italian rules state that junior teams can only have one foreign rider and NSN wanted six. He thinks it's a rather outdated rule and should be changed. However his main objective is still develop riders from Friuli and would drop the NSN link if they moved the goalposts or wanted to change the identity of the team too much.

Nice prologue result as hoped for with Vernon, but an unsatisfactory sprint today. Looked in a good position, but started the sprint too late? and got boxed in? Didn't see enough of the overhead shots to be sure.
Strong was involved in a crash today. Again not sure how badly affected he is. It could be that Gilmore will get a chance tomorrow.

Anybody see in Benson's latest post what transfers NSN should be looking at for next year? Hindley would probably be a fair guess. Maybe I'll have a go at guessing some more on another day.

Vernon looked on a different planet to the rest of the field today. Even more impressive when you note that much of his leadout train crashed out of the race earlier in the stage.
Gilmore the neo pro gave him a good lead out. Watch out for Gilmore.

I wouldn't say I was sceptical about him making the move up to WT, but I knew doing well in Rwanda/Taiwan/Portugal was one thing and repeating that on a bigger stage was another. Certainly last year when he did step up to ride with the main team he didn't really do anything crazy albeit in mainly helper roles.
So far though he looks far from out of place and depending on how Strong is after his crash, he may get another chance at CEGORR. A bit of a feather in the cap for NSN and their hiring of overage riders for their devo team.

According to the team's race report it was meant to be for Strong today, but he had a mech of some sort on the final climb. Even so I'm not sure he would have done any better than his back-up did.
So just the NZ Nats left for the team (it would be amazing to get the RR jersey) in this clutch of southern hemisphere races and it's been a very successful trip. A victory, two podiums and multiple placings. It's just as well really as the team has quite a light programme of races to kick off the season - no Spanish one-day races, no Marseillaise or Besseges and no Omani races. Thankfully there is Valenciana this week.

The team's preview of the race talks about, surprise surprise, stage wins, but they hedge their bets somewhat by saying "one of our biggest goals is to gain racing experience as a group, improve teamwork, integrate the new riders, and learn how best to race with each other."
I thought it was interesting that Stewart started his season in Australia with Vernon and not here with Biniam. I guess the intention is for the Brits to go to the sprinter friendly (?) Giro together. Of course Stewart could do both the Giro and Tour. We'll see how the sprint groups get on over the coming weeks.
Sheehan and Marti have a free role this week, but obviously the TT rules out any type of result. They can just give it a go on the lumpier days.

Wielerflits had a summary of what happened in the race.
George Bennett wint Nieuw-Zeelands kampioenschap en dwarsboomt UCI-punten-plan Burgos Burpellet BH
George Bennett kroont zich opnieuw tot Nieuw-Zeelands kampioen op lastig parcours. Lees hoe hij Burgos Burpellet BH en hun UCI-puntenstrategie dwarsboomde.
Basically Bennett went in the early break, attacked them with ~40km to go and soloed to victory which somewhat explains the gaps. What does leave me scratching my head a bit though is that FFB was in this break, but ended up over 4 minutes down. He must have had a mech or something.
Anyway this is what the winner had to say.
"This victory means a lot to me, because I've had eighteen tough months. To win again in front of family, friends, and with teammates... I'm very proud to wear our jersey again in the WorldTour. My big goal is the Tour de France this summer. To wear the Silver Fern there would be really special. It hasn't sunk in yet. It's awesome !"

The line-up will change a bit for Algarve (provisionally anyway) with Blackmore, Koggy, Neilands and Hofstetter coming in. I'd love Frigo to be challenging for a top-ten and he did achieve that in Pologne last year, but the climbs are a bit tougher here and the competition is a step above.

Marti with a podium yesterday and Girmay taking the win today. It's debatable whether he was the quickest, but he definitely had the best lead out.
Some more sprint action incoming in UAE (and some climbing, TTing and echelons are a possibility too).

Just a bit too long and/or steep for him, but if Bol was up there maybe he could have done better. Anyway it was a nice stage finish with a very varied top-ten. Hopefully we'll see it again.
Dunno. He was on the provisional start list for Algarve, so at some stage over the winter it was planned for him to be starting his season there at the latest.
Strava has him with very little training in December and again a large-ish gap between a camp in Teide in late January and a couple of days ago. Of course he may just not be uploading all his rides, but these gaps coupled with his racing absence may mean he's had some illness/injuries/crash or it could just be that with the team's slim racing programme so far, some riders are just having to wait to make the season's debut - Lutsenko, Williams, Einhorn and Neilands also haven't started yet
