O.K., what do we think the odds actually are of Contador starting (and finishing) the Giro? (This isn't really clinic material is it?) It seems to me that the case is bound to be appealed by WADA if not the UCI, and I can't imagine having a verdict by the start of the Giro. The Tour, possibly, but I doubt in time for the giro.

I would say his a 90% chance of starting the Giro.

Of course I have no solid basis for that, but on what we know it seems very likely. There's no chance there will be a CAS verdict by May.

I was going to say 75% chance, and like you, no real basis for that... but I could see 90% chance of starting. Then if he does start the Giro, he'll almost be 100% sure to start the Tour, meaning I would not expect him to go all out at the Giro.

btw- can ppl who voted for Ricco, who took a lot of votes, recast votes for another? Or also add Conti's name to the ballot? not that it matters but might be interesting to see what would happen.

Why would he go for the Giro if he wanted to save himself for the Tour.

The way that Giro looks, even those guys that save themselves will find it more difficult at the Tour.

And Contador goes for pretty much every race he enters. Its not his style to enter a race and try to save himself.

Unless for some bizzare reason he hasnt looked at the parcors and thinks its mostly flat with a Verbier on stage 13 and Ventoux on the last day, Contador will know that with this Giro its either all out or not at all.

Nah. People who voted for Ricco were wrong. Why would we want to see the opinions of people who have been proven wrong;)

Plus even if he does stay on his bike he has to contend with 40kms of ITT and 20kms of TTT with perhaps the worst time trailing pro tour team there is.

He's just purito #2 with less bike handling

wow, serious load of crap here. anton is a fine itt rider. proven many times I'm not even wanting to go through the hazzle ofg showing some results. but look for them yourself.

Well that is too much for Igor... I'll say "fine" but is true... Igor has some good results in ITT specially the hilly one like last year in CyL

Now that Contador is back, the stageraces finally will be boring again.

Alberto will win the Giro with his finger in nose.

Good question, really. I wondered the same when I saw this on CN:
contador-expected-to-start-giro-ditalia.
But the report in CN is just what Giro race dir Mr. Z wants or expects.
Meh, well see tho.

So, to clear up the procedural rule question, Contador, having been cleared by his national federation, is now free to ride until the CAS actually declares him banned in a theoretical appeal? In other words, if the UCI appeals in two weeks, Contador would still be free to ride for as long as it takes the CAS to hear and deliberate on the case? Interesting...

This is correct. The UCI have the option of suspending Contador if they appeal his aquittal to the CAS, but if they do that and Contador is aquitted again then the UCI would owe Contador all the money he would have made while he was suspended. The UCI, being the cowards they are, are never willing to take that risk.

Just got my exam timetable today. Naturally first thing I did is to see with what Giro stages i have clashes. Thankfully 2 of them are flat stages. The other 2 (stage 5 and 6) are mixed though i think one of them might be Strade Bianchi. Still better than missing mtf's.

Good thinking, so I just checked mine and my last exam is May 6... So that means uninterrupted Giro awesomeness...

until graduation ceremonies where I miss Mt. Etna :(

OK I finally took a long look at the Giro schedule. Looks like the day for Giro party is Saturday, May 21st. Epic climb, epic day.

I envision Italian wines and hors d'ouevres. And lots of shouting at the TV. Just have to hope it isn't windy or the TV reception becomes a problem.

Who's coming over to join me, Schlanger & Gogo? :D

Anyone willing to have a guess at the squads the different teams will be bringing to the Giro? Perhaps that should be a new thread. I'm particularly interested to see How Liquigas will juggle it's commitments between the Giro and the Tour. I think Lampre's team very well may be as strong as Liquigas, if not stronger this year.

Yes Lampre team looks great. Pettachi for the sprints, someone for the leadouts, then Damiano and Scarponi and maybe Kash for GC (working together). Niemiec superdom. Bertagnolli superdom as well.

They might want to save Hondo Spillack and Bole for Tour but anyone of those in the Giro squad and you have an even stronger team.

They just beat leaky in a ttt as well. Well kind of:p

Think Liquigas will be able to send strong squads to both races, I imagine something like the following-

Giro-

Vincenzo Nibali
Sylvester Szmyd
Valerio Agnoli
Tiziano Dall'Antonia
Mauro Finetto
Maciej Bodnar
Alan Marangoni
Jacobo Guaerini
Fabio Sabatini

Tour-

Ivan Basso
Sylvester Szmyd
Eros Capecchi
Daniel Oss
Paolo Borghini
Kristijan Koren
Cameron Wurf
Alessandro Vanotti
Macej Bodnar or Vincenzo Nibali

nibali will defend his vuelta tittle so he won't ride the tour this year. but other then that those teams look good.

also got to love nibali second year skipping the tour to focus on races he can actually win. thats something we don't see a lot this days cough gesink cough
