Couldn’t disagree more: Pogacar could be a fraud in using PEDs but Armstrong was one of the biggest frauds of all time, hoodwinking cancer victims, charitable organizations, U.S. presidents, as well as his sponsors.

I find him to be a compelling character. Would I want to be his friend? Not sure about that, but as entertainment goes, he's top notch (for a cyclist)

If you lived in the states when he was on top it was so sad to see otherwise smart people investing their interest and energy into LiveStrong. I had a surgeon who was like the doctor’s doctor—well regarded by everyone, top of his profession, but he was so proud of the Lance autographed yellow jersey he had framed and on the wall of his office.
We can probably agree that was the responsibility of those people to think and behave that way, to their ultimate detriment. So I think my caustic response to Armstrong is not just about him but about what he represents: the stupid need to stupidly idolize media created “heroes” when we have no idea what kind of person they are.

I probably would have been the same if I had been around that time. Nowadays I can't hate on an old haggard alcoholic narcissistic man. I would stay clear of him definitely though. He's a predatorian animal for sure (all humans are but some are more so lol)

Agree with this: Lance is like Darth Vader - went to dark side, compelling to watch when at top of his game (even admirable despite clear flaws) - it’s the ‘empire’ behind him that deserves much of the vitriol.

I don't buy this narrative that he was some super villain, the people that went on to disparage him were complicit and benefited, although not nearly as much and I think that bred a lot of jealously.
I don't think he was unique in how he doped. I do think he was a generational athletic talent.
What he did was of course wrong and he wasn't a nice guy but his horribleness is really overblown. I think he gets a lot of hate from a nationalistic angle. All the doctors that came up with the doping protocols were European, the athletes that pioneered EPO+test+HGH were European and all the drugs came from Europe.

Don't forget one of the frauds he had to repay: paying his breakaway companion to give him the final win for the triple crown. He got that prize money and a payout from an insurance policy based on the same success. SCA took premiums as a bet for that success. It cost him $10mil in settlement.

You add this to your consideration: He was cheating as an amateur, a US team member and all the while; not the best talent on those teams that had clean guys. They just realized they didn't want to cheat and live that lie no matter how many others did. Those guys were the top notch cyclists, IMO.

You need to dig deeper. Amgen is a US company. He had facilitators that helped the whole PR to "charitable" foundation planning. There are probably dozens of other sleazy, fraudulent athletes but few scammed a cancer charity as cover. Then lied about everything and impuned the character of anyone that disagreed with him. If it sound similar and acceptable; I could probably guess US politics don't bother you either.

What is known is that only some of the money his scam raised went to research, and only in the early years, then his "foundation" began channeling everything back into his campaign to "raise cancer awareness." Which means Pharmstrong was spending it traveling around the world to tell people, "Cancer is bad, don't get it." There were published figures claiming that his foundation had raised half a billion USD, which is another way of saying he spent most of $500 million on luxury hotels and fuel for his Gulfstream when a legitimate cancer charity might have actually done something with it to advance the cause of curing cancer.
