Ha, I love that Pettachi beat Cav today, but Cav was really good about it saying he's glad he was beaten by Pettachi. Would love to see someone like Davis or Hunter beat him tomorrow!! Not that I don't like him, it's just boring watching the same guy win everything, and it'll be good for his ego to loose a bit more often.

Lots of great things about today...

Petacchi winning was awesome certainly got Cavendish going! It's great that Cavendish is fired up and going fast too. It will make for some good racing. And as some have already said seeing Swift up there is really great news too. It was interesting that some of the other Italians did not feature so strongly today - although was it Pozatto who had a go early on the last lap? Any way lack of local presence left room for Davis and Farrer to get in the mix.

I wonder when was the last time the top 5 of a Giro stage was made up of two Brits, an Aussie and an American and only one Italian!

There aren't many strong Italian sprinters in this Giro. The strongest of them all (?), Bennati, is out as are Lorenzetto and Napolitano - who aren't a match to a Cavendish or Farrar though.

Yes, it was Pozzato with Gilbert and Gasparotto. According to the latter, they had planned this attack before the stage. But it didn't go very smoothly, as Gilbert went too strong and the other two had to catch him.

Of Italian sprinters, watch out ISD's young Oscar Gatto today: he is a local hero and has been targeting stage 3 for a long time.

Today's stage doesn't have big climbs, but the last part is on narrow and twisty roads. The last 600 m are slightly uphill.

6", 4", 2" at the sprints (Farrar took second, Cavendish third a few minutes ago).

And more at the finish (20", 12", 8"?!?).

Thanks, so Cav could lose jersey today ...:(

With Vande Velde out what are Garmin's tactics going to be for the rest of the tour? They will work for Farrar today but is there anyone who can contend for the maglia rosa?

Vande Velde was never going for GC.

I think Tommy D. is the man--as scary as that seems.

I don't think anyone was going for GC for Garmin. They were stage hunting and riding with an eye towards the tour. Either way, though, not good news.

Eventhough Garmin didn't say it, it is probably the Danielson prove it or lose it (contract) type of race. He needs some kind of production at this point, even top 20 would be ok for him, a stage win or placing to show he's actually racing would be good as well.

Lorenzetto and Napolitano not a match for Farrar? Tyler's certainly coming on, but the guy has one win this season(a good one, though) and had one very minor win last season. Maybe closer to a Lorenzetto but he's certainly not in Napolitano's class yet.

Good call on Gatto though. Picked up 7th today.

Menchov lost 24 seconds in the end. Simoni was in the lead group.
For those who think this is Danielson's big chance, well, he lost 2.50. Soler lost 1.25 in addition to the time he lost yesterday.

Could give Soler some leeway to go for the KOM jersey and a stage win...

Is Soler scare of riding in front? He is always in the back. I am not sure if he just prefers to loose time at the end in exchange of not falling down again (Not sure if that is walways true). (????)

Soler was in the front but he was involved in that crash that occurred near the front of the the peloton. He had to get a wheel from a teammate.

No doubt Simoni has been a great climber, less so as a champion (having failed misserably at the Tour and, again, having won the Giro only in the absence of a Super Champion like those I just mentioned. Then there is his personality, which has shown to be less than agreeable at times. He's envious of better riders and can be mean. For example, Simoni refused to shake Basso's hand at this year's Giro presentation when Ivan extended his as a peace gesture because he is still ****ed-of over the 2006 Gireo stage when Basso dropped him supposedely after an "agreement." What ever the reason, Simoni is a jealous little whiner who simple can't accept others being better than him.

Based on your choice of words I'd say this sounds pretty personal on your part. Simoni has made the Giro podium more times than any active rider and likely would have won the year Cunego won (2004) basicly on a long breakaway while Simoni's hands were tied. He was disallowed from competing due to a suspension for the coke candy that was later overturned, a year that he likely would have made the podim again. His Giro record speaks for itself. Regarding his being a "jealous little whiner who can't accept others being better than him", I think that is a rather unfair statement considering he has shown respect to Pantani and Armstrong for their performances. Basso not so much but his statements ended up being quite prophetic.

Yes, Zabriskie had had stopped already. He had had a quick exchange with Vandevelde before he rode on.
