So how much they pay for WVA overall win in TdF? ;)

He was 1500/1 before today and is now down to 200/1 likely getting a lot of bets, just like Sagan normally also always drops a lot for that before it starts. Ofcourse he should not have any chance when they get to the real mountains.

Eh, i'm actually pretty sure Mathieu can do a very good ITT and could finish well in the top 10 of this ITT. Just like Van Aert, he has no issues with sustained efforts up to an hour. But, this is one of the things (if you go back to the spring discussion about MVP vs WVA) that many people (including myself) meant with Van Aert's engine. In a longer ITT, i do believe Wout has more potential than Mathieu. Also, had Van Aert won PR (and i still believe he was the strongest in the race, just had too much bad luck), that we could have put the entire debate MVP vs WVA to rest. They are both insanely talented and strong riders. But they are not the same, and each has his own strengths and weaknesses. Though both seem to have more strengths and fewer weaknesses than about 95% of the pro peloton.

Read my post again... not really saying Mathieu can't TT, but rather that he can't trash a WT-peloton like Wout did today. I totally agree that VDP most likely could top-10 today.

We're talking about the team that didn't allow Campenaerts to go full in a Giro TT to 'save himself' for Kruijswijk.
What? How could that make any sense?

I dont like it either, but we shouldnt forget that the Campenaerts back then wasnt going to win that TT. He wasnt a winner yet.

Also Campenaert is pissing his pants a bit for the national championship ITT:
https://sporza.be/nl/2019/06/12/victor-campenaerts-over-wout-van-aert/

He says this is the result of Van Aert working with TJV's coach Heijboer. He also says Van Aert's ITT position on the bike has improved.

Judging by instagram posts, Dan Bigham from Huub Wattbike track team has been working with riders from Jumbo Visma, including Van Aert, on their positions at both velodromes and altitude.

@LIYF, do you still think his sprint is a problem? ;)

What a guy. Two stages, an ITT and a bunch sprint(!), in his first big stage race. WTF.

Yes, because in the TDF and the classics, he will face bigger opposition. He's fast like Van Avermaet, Naesen, Stybar, Alaphilippe... are fast. He isn't fast like Degenkolb, Kristoff, vd Poel... Let alone Groenewegen, Gaviria, Viviani or Jakobsen...

Today he didn't win because he was faster than Bennett, but because circumstances put Bennett in a bad position. And frankly, there is no other real competition. I think, hadn't Hagen attacked in the final K, that Wout would have finished behind him as well.

That only leaves one question unsanswered: can he win Wimbledon and the Tour de France in the same year?

Sorry, he's a 90s kid, which automatically makes it impossible for him to win Slams.

After his impressive Dauphiné time trial victory and today a dominant Belgian title in the strongest edition ever, should we consider him one of the absolute top contenders for the individual tt's in the upcoming Tour?

There's just the one ITT in this year's Tour, but yeah... he'll probably be the top favorite, if he keeps this kind of form.

Just for the one ITT.

The rest are perhaps too unreal to suit him.

MvDP isn't fast he's got great 30 second power at the end of a hard race. In a straight two up drag race he'd lose to Kristoff and Dege. MvDP isn't even the fastest sprinter/cyclocrosser on Correndon, Merlier would clean his clock every time.

Is stage 3 too hard for him? I don't think he is a worse climber than Sagan and co.
Not too hard.
I actually think he's got a shot at wearing the yellow jersey for a couple of days if Jumbo delivers in the TTT.

I completely disagree... MvdP can put out 1400+ watts in AGR final sprint, which as high as normal sprint stage levels. (Ewan recently had 1380 when he won a mass sprint).
He won multiple MASS sprints in FLAT stages with more than decent opposition.

Merlier would clean his clock?
https://www.procyclingstats.com/race/ronde-van-limburg/2018

I think not. You're really selling him short on something he's actually good at. NOT only at hard races.
The main issue is he thinks full mass sprints are dangerous and he doesn't like to do them. A bit the same as Boonen when he was at a later age.

He really had a good chance of becoming World TT champion this year and perhaps a medal in the road race but maybe next year he will focus in the Olympic time trial since it doesn't interfere with his CX schedule. The only problem is that the Tokyo course is much hillier being better suited to Dennis, Dumoulin or Roglic. Still a medal isn't impossible at all especially if some of the big names focus in the Tour instead.
