Okay, let's give him that thread: Colbrelli, you deserve it

You think Colbrelli is gonna be misery for the rest of his life? Sure, now he's probably a bit sad about it. But surely that sadness will fade with time.
I agree, people get back to feeling whole and content with their lives after much worse losses. It might depend upon what else a person has in their life. And all elite athletes have to deal with moving on after their careers, some obviously can deal with that better than others. And all will have some regrets even with a successful long career. Who knows, maybe Valverde will wake up some morning and realize, “damn , I should have pulled in all those chasing groups.” ;)

Unfortunately, Pantani had deeper regrets than what is talked about here. A cyclist, however you look at it, is a zealot, and without that creed is susceptible to trouble existing without riding 1000 km per week. It's like a heroine adict.

I suspect that if you have cheated death, a cycling career is gonna feel quite insignificant. It was a good thing it happened at a race where he was able to get quick medical attention. Otherwise, we might not even have been having this conversation...

And in that case, hopefully Colbrelli will have someone to talk to - either just family and friends, or an actual therapist - to help him deal with any mental struggles.

As to your latter point—I’m not sure how true that is for every rider, but even it it is, won’t they have to deal with that matter when they hang up their cleats?
