I'd say any 3 wins within a 1 year timeframe should count.

For example, with the current schedule, Vuelta 2010/Giro 2011/Tour 2011 would count... the end of the 2011 tour was less then a year from the beginning of the 2010 Vuelta.

But Giro 2010/Tour 2010/Vuelta 2011 would not count. The Vuelta was more then a year after the Giro.

Who cares, we look at the results on all three GT, we are not saying that the best on this list is best rider ever...

Question is which rider was able to races in three Grand Tours in one year on a highest level given the opportunity to do so.

EDIT: But also if you can think of someone like Dean up there, mention him too. It would be nice to have as complete list as we can.

Carlos Sastre in 2008 was better than 2010. But I'd consider 3 consecutive GT's not exclusively raced in the same season. Take Carlos Tour 2008, Vuelta 2008 and the Giro 2009. He finishes below 10 when you combine those on 7 when his overall placing are added. Of course this is when the elimiations from the Giro come into play (DiLuca). Pretty damn low and just as legit as doing it all in one season IMO.

I think that the problem with this is that with the former schedule of Vuelta doing the tour and than the Vuelta-Giro double the following season wasn't such a big deal because riders had time to recover from the end of the Tour till the Vuelta. The same with doing Giro-Tour double and than the Vuelta the following season.

Giovanni Lombardi 2005:

Giro d'Italia: 88
Tour de France: 118
Vuelta a España: 114

Total: 320

Hardly record breaking performances, but at least Lombardi can now see his name in neon lights on the list of tough guys :D

You had to kill this topic, didnt you :)

Never mind I will complete my list (with wiki and cq links) just for fun.

Still Ingsve didnt mention Zabel and Dean.

When I finish with this one, I ll make best-overall-tour-rider-withinonecalendaryear-rider list. I thought first list is more representative because there is less resting period, but we can make the second one too.

Thank you all guys, keep them coming.

ps. I ll keep updating the list on the first page.

Yes he did. Some quick research shows he was the 32nd rider to do it and the 2nd Australian.

He came:

Giro: 94th
Tour: 81st
Vuelta: 124th

Not bad considering he did a LOT of grunt work for Griepel and Van Den Broeck over the season.

He wants to do it again t his year, but its not certain that he will be selected everywhere

Marino Lejarreta did the triple four times, including trying to win the Vuelta one of those years. The guy was a stud.

Problem is that the Giro and Vuelta were at the same time during the 60-70-80's...

Well, not really. The Vuelta was held the last three weeks in April, the Giro in May. As far as I know, the GTs never overlapped, though I could be wrong.

As an aside to that, there are quite a few people who want the Vuelta moved back to spring. Sandwiched between LBL and the Giro (or move the Giro a week forward as well). Food for thought.

Sorry for the digression.
