If all goes well for Contador this year we could probably see him riding and finishing La Vuelta. This got me thinking. If you take total overall position of one rider completing all three Grand Tours in one year, who has the lowest sum of overall positions?

*updated complete list at the bottom of this post

First on my mind is Carlos Sastre 2010
2010
Giro 8
Tour 20
Vuelta 8
Total 32

Julian Dean
2009
Giro 136
Tour 121
Vuelta 132
Total 389 :D

But than,

Marino Lejarreta
1989
Giro 10
Tour 5
Vuelta 19
Total 34

Federico Bahamontes
1958
Giro 17
Tour 8
Vuelta 6
Total 31

Gastone Nencini
1957
Giro 1
Tour 6
Vuelta 9
Total 16

So Gaston leads for now.
Name all the rides you can think of so we can make and all time One-year-triple-grand tour-best-overall-rider list.

ps. Please suggest a shorter name for this title. :)

EDIT: Added later,

Who cares, we look at the results on all three GT, we are not saying that the best on this list is best rider ever...

Question is which rider was able to races in three Grand Tours in one year on a highest level given the opportunity to do so.

EDIT: But also if you can think of someone like Dean up there, mention him too. It would be nice to have as complete list as we can.

I thought the same, but I checked on CQ rankings and found that he DNF on stage 13 at Giro.
Shame, I really thought he did it:(

I got a new one,

Erik Zabel
2008
Giro 80
Tour 43
Vuelta 49
Total 172

I think he road this Tour to see how high in GC he can go. I remember him chasing the main group after a puncture on second to last climb on Alp d'Huez stage.

I am pretty sure that neil stephens completed all three tours in the same year.
The vuelta was first, then the giro and then the tour

These are the 2010 results, in 2008 Sastre "only" did the Tour (1st) and the Vuelta (3rd).
Yup. It was a typo on my side.

So only one season gets in contention???
Not 3 GTs in a row in one year. I mean for example 2007 Vuelta 2008 Giro and 2009 Tour. This doesn`t count? because it is still less than a year, but in 2 seasons.

If it does counts than I add this guy
Denis Menchov

2007 Vuelta 1st
2008 Giro 5th
2008 Tour 3rd
SUM: 9

:D

OFF topic, but nice avatar.

José Manuel Fuente (1971) before he busted onto the scene:

Tour: 72
Giro: 39
Vuelta: 54
Total: 165

Salvador Botella (1958) was on the way for a great score until he abandoned the 21st stage of the Tour where he was 10th

Giro: 15
Vuelta: 14
Tour (quasi 10th)
Quasi score of 39

If you count this way than Indurain had a good streak in 1991-1992

1991 Tour 1st
1991 Vuelta 2nd
1992 Giro 1st
1992 Tour 1st

Sum: 4 (cut one of the tour victories)

Wasn't the 91 vuelta before the 91 giro?
