Oscar Pereiro fund raiser

When Astana met their registration requirements, forced myself to believe that Team Astana will be strong enough to help Alberto Contador to win the 2010 Tour de France. Seeing in the news that Oscar Pereiro had signed on helped a lot. He's had tough times, and I thought this would be a great way for him to go out. But this contract dispute tarnishes it all. If the details I've read are true, it's like the Kazakhs have another hostage situation.

If he ends up on the team because lawyers made it happen, it's tarnished, and it would be really tough for him to be as motivated as he was a week or two ago. Reading that Sainquer was under a lot of pressure to negotiate down his salary or cancel the contract even though the team only has 23 riders throws open the financial concerns again. If they won't honor the contract, but its existence keeps him from signing elsewhere, that makes for really bad karma going into a training camp where trust will be key.

I'm also curious as to the timing, since they claim to have hastily agreed to the contract. The team needed to have the minimum of 23 riders signed by the November 20 deadline. When they recently announced the riders attending camp, Josep Jufre was suddenly on the list. Was he signed after the deadline, with Astana using Pereiro as a placeholder to save the license and then tossing him in the bin when they found someone more attractive to fill the spot? I'm not sure I can root for a team that behaves that way, if it happened.

The only way for me to feel good about the whole thing, and the team for 2010, is to get Pereiro in camp by the first day. I'm living on unemployment benefits, but if someone wants to start a fundraiser to make up the difference in salary and get Oscar on the team, I'll kick in ten dollars American. That's a small price to pay these days for a bit of extra hope and confidence for the new year.

Otherwise I'm rooting for a positive drug test from someone anf a get out of jail free card for Contador. Cheers

Seems to me if they signed a contract with him for 'X' amount and it was executed by both parties then Astana is in breach come January 1 or whenever the first payment is due. Franky this makes me think that the odds of AC defending his TdF title with Astana just got slimmer. Their license was under review for lack of timely payments and now they are trying to force a rider to take less than the contract amount? And so far nothing but silence from Astana. An ominous beginning.

Looks like the fundraiser won't be needed. Astana came to their senses and finalized the deal with Oscar. If I had to guess (and that's all this is) they realized that the UCI would snatch their license if they tried to balk on paying the salary as agreed.

Great news for AC. Still makes me think the people running Astana are a bunch of first class jerks.

Agree.

Great news on Oscar though. Astana is looking pretty solid.

They are certainly better with Oscar than without him. I'm going to reserve judgment on the team until I see them in action. I'm not familiar enough with some of the new faces to know if they have what it takes to escort AC over the cobbles (without losing real time) and through the mountains.

I think you are being generous. They seem like first class morons to me.

Okay, then it's not just me who think that it is too soon for Astana for begin to act like a bunch of jerks. Day over day, I see minus and minus future for this team. Not only because they have only one rider who is really capable of winning things, it'd be the same if they were a bunch of superstars, but this team has hardly a year left. Either that or the things change a lot them, but this is almost impossible.

Good news for Oscar anyway. He's a good guy.

And what swell company

Joking and old pictures aside, he's already training with those two today. Good to know he's definitely back.

I don't think thats an old foto!!
Check out Pereiro's bike - a Specialized, looks like there may be a significant color change to the Astana 2010 kit.

There is a press conference planned in Italy tomorrow with Vino & AC to outline plans for next season.

You are correct. That picture was posted on Alberto's website today. Astana really needs to hire a team photographer.
