In addition to the weather, according to Evenepoel, there was another "bad moment" that disrupted Soudal-Quick Step's plans. Starring ex-teammate Tim Declercq .

"He kept driving in front of us in a technical bend and did not move out of the way,"

"A thank you to him. That was really nasty. Tim may have been an ex-teammate, but you don't do something like that. Did he do it on purpose? I hope not, but it is possible." 😬

Of course it was someone else's fault.

Tim should have had eyes in his back, of course.

"It is possible". Jesus christ.

It's nice that he always has an eloquent explanation for why he didn't win. Interesting that that explanation is never 'the winner was better than me today'. Remco is truly the greatest.

Sounds like Evenepoel didn't wave his arm or yell loud enough to clear the way. I'm sure he won't make that mistake again.

Remco interview

“It's simple: the rain has fallen, the wind has changed,” the time trial world champion sighed afterwards. “We had an almost 20 second lead over UAE halfway through and you could hardly lose any time on the way down. Also those last few corners at the end, if you can take them at full speed or not... You'll get through them 8 to 10 kilometers per hour faster otherwise, so that saves three, four, maybe five seconds per corner. Unfortunately, things didn't go well for us today.”

“If you see that we outclassed the entire pack in the first part... That means that the team is very good. Things just weren't going well today. The wind was completely different than during the exploration, when it was completely downwind. Now we had a headwind for the last 8 kilometers. There were a few more moments of bad luck,” said Evenepoel. “For example, Tim Declercq continued to drive in front of us in a technical corner, he did not move out of the way. Thank you to him. That was really nasty. It may be an ex-teammate, but you don't do something like that. Did he do that on purpose? That's possible, why not?”

We rode a good time trial and were even faster on the climbs than all the plans we had made. This is the course and you must accept it, but it is not easy. We were eager to win. You don't want to lose a time trial due to natural circumstances. I'm not going to say that it's over, far from it, but it is just very remarkable that we lose 40 seconds in 10 kilometers. That's actually not possible. Too bad, but on to tomorrow because there is a nice stage on the program," he said.

And the bonus on Primoz Roglic, for example? “That's right, but we really wanted to win the stage. Everyone did their best. We knew the classic men had to survive to the waypoint, which they did well. Then they were able to recover. But yes, due to certain circumstances we lost time and that is a shame. Tomorrow we will have to look forward to BORA, because it is a ride for Roglic to make up time. It will be a nervous and tough stage, which is a bit like an Ardennes classic, but a bit more difficult.”
