If he thinks there are 10 km left, and stops with 10 km to go, thus getting caught, that would be bad.

If he thinks there are 30 km left, and continues for another 10 km efter the finish, that would be... a bit weird.

How did that come up?

'Ching-hai' is pretty much correct. The actual ch sound is slightly softer than how an Englishman would say it.
