Are they taking any events out in place of those? That’s a lot of team events that will have a lot of athletes and games.
as far as I understood, only Breakdance is definitely out, and Boxing (although due to issues with the federation) and Modern Pentathlon are uncertain.

So unless they significantly plan to reduce the amount of participants in other team sports, it seems dofficult to see a way to get to a lower number again. Maybe they are fine with the approach that everything is bigger in America.

Had to laugh at a quote from the LA mayor saying how LA will be able to match the show Paris has put on: said it’s true LA doesn’t have the Eiffel Tower and other historic monuments, “but we have the Hollywood sign.” 🤪

I see LA having a more minimalist style. I guess we’ll see what they leave in or take out. Or if it’ll be another squish to reduce participants per event.

Funny, but tbh cities just don’t do anything for me. A good geographical location is way more appealing.

I'll have to watch the whole encore replay because I missed a lot, but I thought the fireworks and rendition of My Way were wonderful at the Closing Ceremony. (My Way never ceases to make me bawl. :sob: )

I wasn't sure what to expect because I've seen so many Olympics at this point but, I really enjoyed the Paris Olympics. And I enjoyed when the athletes sailed in on boats during the Opening Ceremony, that was definitely original and memorable. Thank you, Paris!

Most cities don’t for me, but central Paris is a different story. Having been there many times but just for short visits, I loved seeing the sites from the heli or camera moto during the road cycling and Marathon events. In addition, the summer Olympics is so huge that it has to happen in a major city to be able to accommodate everyone. Will be nice to again have the upcoming winter games in a smaller mountain resort (Cortina d’A) with stunning mtn backdrops.

I much prefer the look of European cities as far as that goes. Everywhere I’ve been there has been outstanding. A city with a varied geography is generally a bonus though, especially for certain sports.

Wow, I didn't even realize the next Winter Olympics will be in the Cortina d'Ampezzo region, I just soiled myself with glee! (Skied and hiked in that part of the world many years ago.)

Really enjoyed the Olympics in the end, some great moments. Well done France. As usual some events I really enjoyed were unexpected, like when I had a few minutes to spare at one point and checked out the surfing, it was the day of huge surf on that really dangerous but spectacular wave (the day the Medina photo was taken) and got totally absorbed in it.

Meanwhile GB quietly went back to sub-20 gold and outside the top 5 as it was before the magic Beijing leap.
I saw their stats earlier and was struck by how they've settled into a pretty similar level of total medals, but obviously getting more of them in golds makes such a difference to the table position - comparing their Rio to Paris performance for example. Personally, I think it's great when countries expand the number of sports they perform well in, as it probably has a knock-on effect in terms of more diverse sporting interests and facilities. China seems to have steadily increased the number of sports they are competitive in over the years, and without looking into it too deeply I get the impression the Brits are also doing quite well in that sense, as they seem to be winning medals in more/new areas (while being less dominant in some, like in the velodrome and sailing). Countries like Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands have had great games, some memorable performances - hope to see African countries become more competitive overall, Botswana joining the East Africans as top medal contenders was great to see.

If anyone would like to compete in the next Olympics, having an eye on the qualification criteria for the new sports could be a good idea.

To compete for Australia in breakdancing, you only had to register at the federation, pay $20, and win a qualifying tournament. Only 15 women took part. Neither of them was any good.

It resulted in 0 points in Paris and a lot of laugh on social media, though.

Funnily enough, that qualifying tournament was the Oceanian championships which means that no New Zealandic women could break either.

Reminds me of the Hungarian snowboard half-pipe woman who couldn't do any tricks, just hunted out events where there were fewer entries than there were qualification point-scoring positions, and relied on a few people recording DNFs as they tried to actually do the things that the event is scored on.

Even more ridiculous, the British violinist Vanessa-Mae appeared at the Sochi Winter Olympics for Thailand, having qualified by doing competitions that were organised with the sole purpose of getting her the qualification points. This included things like a Slovene national junior competition where she, a 35-year-old woman, went up against children, retired athletes being entered to improve the number of points allocated based on quality of field, and athletes who weren't even present being registered as having started so that they could be included in the quality of field when they inevitably DNFed by not crossing the finishing line.

I guess the tagline for that competition was breaking bad.

But I did watch parts of the early rounds of the women's Olympic tournament, and I actually enjoyed that they weren't all doing the same things. And at least they weren't falling over all the time like in skateboarding.

Actually I think the skateboarding competition could be improved, if you had them battling against each other.

as far as I understood, problem in this case was also that the event was entered by the World DanceSport Federation, normally responsible for more classical types of dance events. They basically turned into the responsible governing body for breakdacing from one day to the other, because their other disciplines were not considered by the IOC.

So while the sport itself is very competitive, athletes were not organized in this federation before.

they definitely need some adjustments, same as BMX. With the qualification right before, both basically also were 5-hour competitions, no one in his right mind can watch anyway.

One of the sports that will be added in 2028 is flag football, and four years in advance I will already recommend you all to watch it during the next Olympics. The reason for this is several top end NFL players have expressed their interest in competing, and it's going to be hilarious. Players such as Tyreek Hill, who honestly wouldn't look out of place in the Olympic final of the 100m dash, and Patrick Mahomes wil probably be on the team. The likely result is something comparable to the Dream Team of '92.

Yes, but unlike in Basketball, the other teams will only have two or three good players, so every game will be a one-sided beatdown. If the entire game consists of Mahomes throwing to a wide-open Hill, interspersed with turnovers from the opponent, that won‘t be entertaining.

Here‘s a list of guys who are likely out of the sport in four years, but could currently be the stars of the opposing teams. I guess Canada, Nigeria, Australia (although they mostly have punters) and Germany could be the main competitors. Canada and Australia have their own versions of the sport so those would be the strongest. I don‘t think any team except for the US ( and maybe Canada) will have an NFL QB though so it will come down to who will find the least bad quarterback.

It would be a complete beat down by Team USA. Even the third stringers have a good chance of wining gold with ease.
