Looks like Jacobs injured himself. Wont see him until LA 2028
Cramp (luckily). 9.85 a very good time for him so it bodes pretty well for the 4 x 100, Italy probably favourites there for a bronze, and also to mop up any errors from USA/Jamaica.

Did anyone else think the 100m guys were huge even in a way that looked like they had a couple bf% that could be lost without sacrificing muscle?

Is there any data on variation in reaction times?
Analysis of ~1300 sprints:

“Reaction times (0.166 ± 0.030 seconds) of males were significantly shorter (p < 0.01) than those for females (0.176 ± 0.034 seconds). No relationship was observed between reaction time and height. Male finalist sprinters had substantially shorter reaction times in the finals (0.142 ± 0.017 seconds) compared with round 1 (0.161 ± 0.024 seconds), round 2 (0.155 ± 0.020 seconds), and the semifinals (0.153 ± 0.022 seconds). Female finalist sprinters obtained their fastest reaction times during the semifinals (0.153 ± 0.018 seconds). The best reaction times were registered at the age of 26-29 years for males (0.150 ± 0.017 seconds) and >30 years for females (0.153 ± 0.020 seconds), but reaction times across different age categories were also positively correlated with 100 m performance (p < 0.05). “

In sprints it goes by time to produce force, and for swimming they go by time for feet to leave the block which is closer to .65 seconds.

Seems like it’s pretty tight. The false start limit is 100ms at least as of 2020.

The last few years NBC is doing what it does best, pumping up a number of high profile Americans and completely ignoring everything else, as if nobody else matters. Peacock is nice in that you can get all events, not just ones where Biles, Ledecky, Crouser, Lyles, and Lebron are mentioned more than the actual competition. It’s really mind numbing.

Everyone who was all up in arms about how the USA media reports medals can rest now. ;)
It was less being 'up in arms' about it, more that it was highly likely the US would top the table once the events like T&F began, where the US could expect a large haul of medals, and poking fun at the fragile egos of the press that they couldn't cope with America not being top of the medal table start to finish - and then contriving a silly, convoluted and entirely unnecessary graph to explain themselves when called out.

Great race there in the Triathlon Mixed today. France was unlucky to crash out early, but that resulted in quite a nailbiter between the Germans, GB and USA for Gold.

Absolute chaos in the Pole Vault as it turns out 4,40 is enough to get through to the final, some 30cm below the qualifying height. Only eleven cleared 4,55, so everybody who cleared 4,40 first time is through. Massive reprieve for some high profile underachievers like Tina Šutej and Olivia McTaggart, although Anicka Newell is still out after needing all three attempts to clear 4,40.

The big story, however, is Molly Caudery being eliminated without clearing a height. She was 5th in the Worlds last year and is the World Indoor Champion, and though her form wasn't great coming in, neither was Katie Moon's and she breezed through 4,55, or Wilma Murto's and she took two attempts but cleared it comfortably. But, having been the only athlete to pass 4,40, Caudery is a genuine medal contender eliminated without setting a mark.

The women‘s pole vault has had it coming though, always going from super-makeable to top level in one or two heights would lead to mayhem at some point. It might be a long final with 20 competitors.

Beam final similarly crazy, with d'Amato winning almost by default.

I'll repeat what I already typed: IMO, it would be weird for USA media not to put the USA on the top of their charts. Also, I'd be shocked if they were the only ones, but, hold on to your hat here, I don't care how other countries report their medals.

I'll repeat what I already typed too: that a few people were just having a bit of light-hearted fun at the US press' desperate need to portray themselves as being the best at all times, and given it was almost certain that they would be comfortably top of the table by the end of the Games anyway, it was a bit amusing from an outside perspective.

But some people took offence at that for some reason.

If that's at me, you missed because I'm not the least bit offended (actually lmao). More amusing than putting your own team on the top of the list, is people form other teams protesting it.

Get the alternative medal counts back up quick!!!

We are languishing down the table with a paltry 10 golds but the track cycling has started so hopefully we can turn things around with future Quickstep star Ethan Hayter.

It wasn't really at you tbh, but either way, nobody that I can see was protesting it, they were simply poking fun at the silliness and complete unnecessariness of it. This was never meant to be a serious discussion. I don't know about in the other thread where the links to the Washington Post, the NYT and others were first posted, but in here this started as just a joking aside between me and Chewie about how the US kept getting silvers and bronzes in the early part of the games.

Meanings aren't always easy to convey in text form, but it comes across that you have interpreted the comments people have made about the tables/graphs as having been serious and found amusement in it, while we on the flip side have found amusement in the tables/graphs presented and interpreted the response as serious.

Biles mistake again in the floor means Andrade gold!! Very happy for Andrade, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th would have been brutal. Shame for Biles, but she gets three golds and a silver so a good return – possibly a bit tired today? The gymnastics schedule is very intense.

Italy in the men's volleyball with one of the most ridiculous comebacks of all time. Bottled the 2nd set to go 2-0 down against Japan, then saved three match points at 24-21 in the 3rd and saved another at 15-14 in the 5th to win in five.

There might be a couple of random gold medals coming in one of the silliest new events, the kayak cross. I really enjoy the kayak slalom events, massive test of strength and resilience and technique, but the cross is... bad

That long wait at the start went from building tension to dragging on a bit. Simbine ran 9.82 and missed out on bronze, very close race.

Sure was a lot of build-up for an event that lasted less than 10 seconds.

Track cycling starts today if Im not mistaken. Always fun to watch on the big stage!

There's even a thread about it in the Track Cycling Section.

We hit the new low in badminton with only one bronze. Everyone saw it coming though.
Speed climbing and weightlifting may provide some joy, but when your adopted national sport failed so hard, general mood can only be lifted to limited height.

It's hard for a country with very few sports to excel on and so many heads to please😁

May I ask; where are you from?
