Late to post this, but again, the Ethiopians screw the pooch in a distance race. Gebrhiwet playing footsie towards the back of the pack until like the last two laps and then he goes with 500-550 to go, but leaves it way too late, leaving Ingebritsen as the only possible winner given his 1500m speed. I can’t understand the slow pace that the Ethiopians set. Ingebritsen was almost blocked in when Gebrhiwet went, but clearly the Ethiopian isn’t the sprinter that his countrymen of the past were: Bekele, Jeilan, Sihine, Gebrselassie, Yifter…

Some sports don't make clear distinction between amateur and pro. In some other sports, they are like two different worlds, including boxing.

And now they allow returning pros to play at the Olympic? I never knew that. I don't think even golf - where the professional and amateur forms are more alike - allow such switch back.

Uzbekistan won 5 of 7 men's boxing gold. Their big guy Jalolov was/is clearly a pro.

Medal count comes down to Women's basketball and 81kg weightlifting.
Seems to be a very fitting end to the medal race business.
both should likely win. If so, it comes down to this:

- Volleyball Women's final Italy - USA
- Wrestling 76kg Women's final Blades (USA) - Kagami (JPN)
- Cycling, women's omnium, with 2021 winner Valente

If they win one of those, USA will top the medal table. Otherwise it'll be China.

China has someone in the modern pentathlon, but no idea if she is any good.

Golds by sports so far:

Diving 8
Shooting 5
Table tennis 5
Weightlifting 4
Gymnastics 3
Artistic swimming 2
Badminton 2
Boxing 2
Canoeing 2
Swimming 2
Athletics (Walk) 1
Cycling (BMX) 1
Tennis 1

so lots of niche/artistic stuff, yeah, but Tennis was pretty mainstream. They also took bronze in the Golf today, and came surprisingly close in Hockey.

edit: missed Gunara's post above.
I don't think diving is particularly niche, it's just an absolute stronghold for China. And it has to be said, the Chinese divers are just remarkable.

Amateur boxing is a weird pseudo-definition.

There was always a lot of abuse of the amateur definition back in the Ostbloc days. It's just that now that's largely coming from central and eastern Asia rather than central and eastern Europe, that's all.

Thing is I don't think they're slipping him in against the rules, they'd easily be uproar. Or everyone do it too.

I think it's the rule that is too weird.

As difficult as it looks, I really hope China will top the medal table.
It just feels better to share the experience with more countries.

They regularly did this kind of walkover against the whole continent in the last several AGs :

At first it looked cool, then it became boring, now it gets past ridiculous and starts to hurt.

EDIT :
Ignore the tweet, just didn't find better picture of the table😁

Women's marathon right now-I'm gonna play it safe and go with the usual Kenya or Ethiopia. Or whoever is not a white girl.
