Don't tell me the winner comes from that group. Just no.

There are huge advantages for top favourites to have this break going until after Wallers:
  1. less riders and thus less stress for positioning.
  2. having some team mates in the front after Wallers, that would be dropped if the whole peloton hits Wallers.
  3. Not having to pull in a group of favourites if you still have some good riders of your team in front.

If the peloton sit up and give them an advantage, I'd struggle to see them catching that group. You'd want to keep that sub 2 mins I think.

Lots of riders will drop out of the group because of mechanicals. No cars behind.

Counter to that is if some of the favourites with a lot of teams up front have an issue, they've a lot less guys to help them.

Its all under control gapwise, a minute is pretty easy to bridge. But some strong riders in the first group will stay out of trouble on the first sectors, made a good choice to be there.

Ballerini and Walscheid are dangerous guys in the front group. Walscheid has the sprint + TT skills for this race. Bissegger and Affini are also much more dangerous on this kind of terrain than on short cobbled climbs.
