Honestly don't even think Van der Poel expected this to be the winning move, but when everyone else capitulates instantly...
Yes, indeed one would have to think so. Rather just force some more selection. Because timing wise it would have (normally) been safer to go on Mons-en-Pevele, if you anyway know you can drop them on the cobbles.

Well, they came out the sector with 9 seconds on him. Then 10km flat. Then Pedersen was pulling for 3-4 km. Gap stayed the same. No way, there was no chance to catch him if they all cooperated. I agree, that he probably rides away again on Mons-en-Pevele but at least try...
