I don't really get how FDJ are approaching this race. Of all their riders, they trust Le Gac - who's not even in the front group, mind you - to win?

Gilbert won both Paris - Tours and Lombardia in 2009... not many riders have done that, especially not in the same year.

Two very different races to win in the span of a week, like they were back then, and not the on the same weekend like now. He also won Gran Piemonte in between that week and Coppa Sabatini before Paris-Tours.

What a rider he has been over the years. Legend.

I think ASO rather has Demare winning a bunch sprint than with all due respect some random breakaway guy.
This design was intended as ASO's answer to Strade Bianche, at the expense of the character of one of the oldest races. To see it blow up in their face in increasingly spectacular fashion each year gives me some schadenfreude.

Abrahamsen is probably going to be catched but he is doing one hell of a race.

But the race ending in some sort of sprint doesn't mean that it hasn't been entertaining.
That was also true for the old route. Which didn't have a track record of producing sprints in its final years anyway. And had the added bonus of less crashes and mechanicals.

How exactly has it done so the other years?

Well it's Campenaerts, maybe he just doesn't realize it. De Lie is 100% out.

Yeah, the old Paris-Tours was usually a great race. I'm not a big fan of these gravel sectors either.
