he certainly needed to make sure he takes his chances ... as next year they might be pretty few and far between.

With Cadel, Thor and Phil all putting their hand up, GVA might not get too many opportunities.

Well done to him

Next year, he will have to do the same thing he did yesterday. I actually think that suits him best. Milano-San Remo was the same game and he came close there as well.

And with all those BMC guns behind him next year, he's chances will rise even more. That's of course purely theoretical.

Cav sets the precedent for not being able to finish any race next year other than a sprint. And this one was not that hard. Hard luck for McEwan and all the other sprinters ( thought McEwan was in great form ). It is nice to see a breakaway get away eventually, so hats off to them. Poor Marcarto has been attacking all year. But GVA handled him well and did not shirk in his pulls either. Nice to see him win too as no one other than Cadel has won for BMC this year and he can show more talent next year helping Gilbert.

What are you on about Cav finished 42nd in the same group as McEwan and all the other sprinters @ 1.23 and in front of Gilbert 67th @ 1.46, so why is it hard luck on them and not him or have I misunderstood your meaning.

Stop calling him McEwan please.

Also it's Marcato, not Marcarto, but I'm hoping that was a typo :).

I only saw the highlights of the final 30km on Eurosport yesterday evening and I never seen Cavendish once, was wondering what his rainbow stripes looked like. I did however see Gilbert having a go and McEwen sprinting at the end. I didnt even know Cavendish was in the group until I seen the results.

McEwen and Cavendish are actually very similar in that both were/are top sprinter who seem incapable of winning anything other than sprints in stage races or smaller races that finish in sprints on a regular basis. People bang on about Cavendish winning Milan-San Remo but in 5 seasons as a pro, that is the only Top 10 finish Cavendish has in a monument which considering there is also Ghent-Wevelgem and Paris-Tours for the sprinters is **** poor for the best sprinter ever.

Paris Tours is one of the oldest races on the calendar and despite several name changes during the 70s and 80s did actually make it onto the World Cup competition. Paris-Tours is more prestigious than half the World Tour events anyway.
