I think Sagan is an outsider but he still can win the WC this year. He has beaten Kittel in a few sprints in the tdf this year and also showed on stage 21 that he can beat Greipel. The only rider who was basically always better than Sagan in the bunch sprints of the tour was Cavendish, but we don't know yet how Cav will deal with the long distance in Doha. He trained for the track this year which is probably why he was so strong on really easy stages but his climbing seemed to be worse than ever which might mean that he will also have problems in a long race like the WC. I think Kristoff, Bouhanni, Demare, Matthews, Viviani, and so on will probably be slightly worse than a Sagan in top shape but they are ofc. all contenders for a medal and might also beat Sagan if he doesn't bring his absolute A game to Doha.

Eh? Did you want a different finish to me as I'm pretty sure I saw Greipel win that?
You also saw how much faster Sagan was. He just accelerated a bit later. He has also beaten Greipel before, even on flat sprints and for the win.

We are not talking about before, we are talking about stage 21. It doesn't matter how fast you are going, it matters what position you are in when you cross the line and he was 2.

What I saw was Sagan come out, initially make ground but then slowed and lost by at least a wheel even with a better bike throw.

Um, Greipel won, which means he was faster. Had both of them eaten wind for the same duration Greipel would have still won.

For Doha, if it's ridden hard then Kristoff and Degenkolb (2015 version) would be the men to beat, as both have shown to retain an excellent sprint after a long race.

It's depressing to think that someone less awesome will likely replace him as the wearer of rainbow. I don't remember the last time having someone so fitting to be dubbed world champion and to wear the jersey for a year. Damn the parcour, for me only Valverde come close in worthiness for such title these days - not that he ever deseved it in any kind of route before, but with this one the prospect of a forgettable winner look too bright.

I didn't say he beat greipel but the sprint was extremely close and if sagan hadn't lost greipels wheel when greipel started his sprint it's quite likely he would have won.
Edit: I just saw your 2nd comment and maybe we really saw a different finish. Sagan first was faster and then got slower before he lost by a wheel although he did the better bike throw? Thats like the exact opposite of what happened.

I was just reading the story about PS preriding the OLY XC course, and got to thinking how significant it is that the World Road Champ is switching disciplines 'mid' season.

Do you guys consider him a favorite for this years World's RR?
This is Sagan. Make a special thread for this.
NO! Stop making "special" threads. Discuss Sagan in the Sagan thread. We don't need: Peter Sagan, Can Sagan win WRR, How will Sagan do in Oly dirt race, Do you like Ps's hair, Can Sagan win green,...those should all be discussed in his thread or other related threads. They don't require "special" threads that muck up the forum and make it difficult to find other threads. When the other threads are difficult to find people start more duplicate threads,,,

What a great win for Greg.

What pisses me off is that Sagan was so, so strong. In fact, he seemed stronger than Greg on any single aspect of road racing. So frustrating.

You are not giving enough credit to Greg now. I'm not convinced Sagan could've done the same today.
It's a big question mark though, but it was Sagan himself that didn't believe he had a chance of winning today which says enough doesn't it?

Sagan could be the biggest loser of today's race. :(

No, that was Henao.

And this. If you look at the Tour Stage GVA won it's clear that GVA had a way better chance at the Olympics than Sagan. Sagan hasn't really focused on longer climbs in the last 2/3 years.

Definitly true. Sometimes it is hard to figure out how good is his climbing, as Sagan the most of the time give up the climbing if there is nothing to gain with it, but from what I saw on TdS and Tdf I also think his climbing is inferior last two years and definitly inferior then GVA climbing. To tell the truth I was very disapointed with Sagan on Stage 5 . He had a yellow and he did not even try to defend it. As it was the stage that GVA win it should be defandable . he clearly was not in good climbing form.

Sagan hasn't been climbing better than GVA this season. Just look at him this season, he's super buff, Greg is skinnier and thus able to climb better.

But yeah, he probably feels a bit stupid right about now.

I am not sure about that. He did really well in driving the breakaway over climbs in the penultimate stage but he also got dropped like a stone on the foot of various climbs. I think that he just let go at some points in the Tour but I would have been really surprised if he made to the GVA group by the end of the final descent.

what a pointless conversation,if nibali and henao didnt crash,we would have a podium of nibali, henao and majka and no GVA...but you cannot predict crashes can you? you certainly cannot bank on that

Would Sagan be able to drop De Gendt uphill like GVA did in the Tour?

Highly doubt Sagan would have been in contention today (but then that's coming from someone who completely wrote off GVA too, so what do I know  )

Really pointless. Too much iffs :). But if Nibalii had not crashed and Sagan was in the chasing group we would have seen him either to get killed on that descent or to chase them down :D
