I recently attended a conference in Barcelona. Many great photo opportunities, especially people. I had been doing a photojournalism course, so people and telling a story were my main focus during this trip. Shot mainly with a Nikon D300 and 18-200mm lens.

Last year I flew back home to Australia and went on a wonderful driving tour of the outback. We arrived at Uluru with the temperature at 39C ... very hopeful for some wonderful sunsets and sunrises with beautiful red rock, green shrubs, and blue skies. However, by that afternoon, the clouds rolled in, the temperature plummeted to 15C, the rain started, and the rain didn't stop for 2 weeks! While we did not see the landscape we wanted, we did enjoy this beautiful double rainbow over Uluru on one morning. This was taken with my Nikon D300 and Tamron 12-24mm lens. No post processing.

Bump!

I'm after a 'decent' manual compact to keep in my saddle bag for scenic and candid shots out on rides. The Sony HX50 and Panasonic TZ40 look like good options given their 24mm wide angle lenses, 3.3-3.5f stops and manual possibilities. Lowish weight and bulk helps too!

Does anybody have any thoughts on which of these is the better choice or any alternatives? Cheers :D

Nice. I especially like the first one in black and white. Did you do that post or with the Nikon's internal processing?

I don't want to drag around the 18-200. I'm still using the kit lens but I think I will spring for the 16-85 soon for the D3200 I just bought. Also looking to add the 11-16 Tokina since most of what I do is landscape and scenery. I was into photography in the past, but got out of it. I have the bug again, and I am trying to keep my purchases under control.

What other lenses do you have?

I have the bug big time and it is easy to get out of control, so I know how you feel. I try and do as little post-processing work as possible, but used the Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 plugin to convert that image to B&W.

Lots of lenses and the one I choose really depends on what I am doing. For travelling, I prefer to either carry one lens which can do everything (18-200mm on my D300 or 28-300mm on my D600). Occasionally I'll take a second camera body with a wide angle lens (12-24mm) when I am travelling. I also have a 70-200mm f2.8 and a 300mm f4 for sports and wildlife, I have some widish prime lens for street photography (24mm and 50mm), and a 105mm macro lens for macro photography. I also have some fun lenses such as the 10.5mm fisheye and a lens baby. If you're looking to have some inexpensive fun, then a lens baby may be worth looking at. The prime lenses are also good because they are usually relatively inexpensive, usually easy to pickup second hand, they're faster than zoom lenses, and they make you think more about composition because you have to put yourself in the right spot rather than relying on the lens to put you in the best spot. The wide angle is really nice - I have a couple for my D300 and full-frame D600 and you will really enjoy the 11-16.

Here are some recent photos ...

Some macro shots in my back garden - one of the great things about macro photography is that the more you look, the more you find. Very fascinating!

Great photos everyone!
Great stuff elapid.

I don't touch my camera for almost a year, at least to do try and do something interesting with it, lol.

Here are some I took over the last two years. Most of the photos have some post processing, since my camera sucks bricks. Besides, I think like Joel Tjintjelaar... I'm only satisfied when I turn a picture, be it a point and shoot or a rather long exposure, to what I had in mind. I am to photography like a sunday bike rider is to cycling. I am a complete nab that knows much of theoretical stuff, but unfortunanetly can't apply it very often.

Didn't place the emoticons so I could post the 4 images. *stickouttongue* comes here.

Anyway, I just play with silverefex in LightRoom, no photoshop retouching or anything like that.

1. Simple black and white convertion in SilverEfex. Just some droplets over a car bonnet.
