This is a disgrace. Spain protecting their own

Be happy that he has actually been found guilty and sentenced to a year in prison.

The general feeling amongst my contacts here in Madrid is one of surprise that he got a custodial sentence.

Agree that the blood bag issue is a disgrace, but my understanding is that all the rulings of this court are subject to appeal, so if WADA feel strongly enough about it, they can go to the appellate court.

I don't know what the basis of the refusal is, it could well be related to Spanish law and the ownership of the blood.
How many other countries would allow the blood-bags to be sent outside of their boundaries for testing?
Why single Spain out as "protecting their own"?
Thus far Spain is the only country that has been put in the position of having to test their laws relating to this, to my knowledge.

Without the BB's being turned over it is a fail. The riders will continue doping and new doping doctors will appear to take a chance at making the big, easy money. Sad

It wasn't about keeping the cyclists safe though, it was about keeping the football/soccer players safe.

Football and tennis are the flagships of Spanish sports; cycling is inferior.

Your conclusion is not correct. The case has been run according to the old law that was applicable at the time of the events being judged. Athletes can be prosecuted with the current law, so they can be identified in future cases.

Unless the Spanish Prime Minister steps in and protects them, you mean.

Dave.

27% adult unemployment out there so having Madrid and Barcelona bringing in outside cash is very important for the economy, hence the cover up and half baked trial.

Nothing to do with the current crisis. The cover-up began as soon as Puerto broke out, and the economy was good back then.

This is a disgrace. The blood bags will be destroyed and Fuentes won't even get banned from his profession for life. **** this.

Well this case was a mockery to justice from day one, in the end there is still nothing to stop doping.

Back at square one.

Luigi Cancellara will be celebrating tonight.

Will the owners/donors of the blood bags be allowed to have the blood bags available or otherwise delivered into their possession for potential future health issues?

If so, will they be able to schedule time and place of delivery? You know, for convenience and for insurance against a possible accident in such a dangerous sport.

Will the Spanish Health Care system be able to add to their fragile economy by charging for any further storage time?

Dave.

As someone else says, this is perhaps a bit too harsh considering the laws.

I'm not sure if it had happened in the Netherlands if the bloodbags would have been allowed to cross the borders or even researched in the Netherlands after all these years. Same for the USA, if there's one thing it's an unwillingness to let other countries get acces to court data (and don't even think about extradicitions from the USA).

Keep in mind that there is a certain amount of protection of patient data we should be very happy about. In this case it sucks, but that's perhaps the other side of the coin. I'm really hesistant on being careless with these things, even though I'm just as interested as anyone to know the real list of involved athletes.

Not saying I'm happy about this one, especially the fact he doesn't get a life-time ban is ridiculous, but the bloodbags were a stretch to begin with.

and Saiz acquitted ? I'm laughing at this one.

Sad day for the sport but it seems Spain does not want to turn over their heroes. Maybe Contador's and other big name were a part of it ?
I'm not that shocked really, as it kind of reminds me how the Jamaican IOC treat anything related to Usain Bolt's tests, doctor visits , etc. etc. Sweep it under the rug and lock the door.

Good news for Johan I guess ?
