I think you overestimate the route. It's really not that hard in my opinion.

The route is indeed not really hard if they all wait for the last 1 or 2 laps, but it will be hard and selective if a few teams have the balls to open the fight early.

Porter is not working for the BBC anymore, they have released him last year. ITV has picked him up to do the Tour of Britain this year

its not the UCI dealing with the tv stations directly, there is a right holder in between who buys them from the UCI and deals with the stations - and that one changed last year. At the moment (until 2016 at least) its "Infront Sports & Media", a company directed by Philippe Blatter, the nephew of Sepp Blatter.

Eurosport uses to buy packages to be allowed to cover the events all over Europe - and as far as I know Infront denied to make them an offer like that and preferred to sell the rights individually for each country (which Eurosport was not able to deal with because of company policies + monetary issues).

Thanks for the clarification. It is becoming more difficult to follow sport, not just cycling, because of media companies buying up sporting rights just to make money. Most have no interest in promoting sport in general or a specific sport. Its sad when true sports fans cannot watch sport because of these money makers. Eurosport might have its faults but its coverage of cycling and other 'non mainstream sports' on TV is wider than most local tv. Not every national broadacaster, like Germany, wants to show cycling.

However, if the UCI themselves sell the rights to companies like this they obviously are more concerned about making money than increasing the profile of the sport. Where does the money go? I wonder how many countries are covering the events?
