He did improve massively from 2012 to 2013 and in 2014 he was on the same level. This year has clearly been sub-par.

Exactly. There are only few exceptions, like f.e Terpstra or Dumoulin. And that's usually because those riders don't go by the pre-defined path of joining development teams with almost pro-like programs.
Well technically Dumoulin did 1 year of Rabobank, but other then that nothing like it.

Casper Pedersen in 28th 1.06 behind punctured in the same spot as Bak and Boasson Hagen and if you discount 20 seconds (dont know exactly how much time he lost but at least 20 seconds I reckon) he would be 11th. That is an incredible result considering he is from 1996 and his main focus still is on the track.

In all seriousness, probably it's because of the development teams with almost pro-like programs that Dekker_Tifosi mentioned, they race a lot an train very hard form an early age and many of them hit the wall in their early 20ies and stop improving or even start regressing as a rider.

The two situations can't be compared.

What Saxo did was pure tactical skill:

Valgren dropping the hammer, same time as they guy in 4th stopped pedalling... they could have gotten 1-2-3, if Valgren had realised how big a gap they created with that little manoeuvre.

Breschel backing off, to give his old trusted lead out man (who is off the team after this season) the victory, is a sign of a class rider - Had Cavendish did it for Renshaw, everyone would be praising him.

It's not something someone who respects the history of cycling, should be bitching about.
