With tomorrow's ever so boring parade in Paris, it's time to get ready for the real deal, the coup de grâce: La Vuelta. This is where Giro-peakers and burst TDF dreams come together. This is where bunch sprints are a complete no show. Climbing from Málaga to Madrid. In this thread we speculate, from team selections to race favourites and so on.

La Vuelta is known for making scrubs Grand Tour stage winners. Jonas Vangenechten and Sander Armée have won a stage in a Grand Tour: it happened here, in La Vuelta. One fun little twist to this years race however, is Innsbruck. It's very much a possibility some starters will wave the white flag halfway through the race, in order to get to the World Championships in the best shape possible.

Some confirmed to start big guns. Please, feel free to complete:
Sunweb: Kelderman
Lotto Soudal: Benoot, Lambrecht (only first half of the race)
BMC: Porte, Teuns
Lotto Jumbo: Bennett, Kruijswijk, van Poppel
Astana: López
Mitchelton-Scott: S. Yates, Caleb Ewan
Bahrain: I. Izagirre, V. Nibali(*)
Cofidis: N. Bouhanni
Quick-Step: Mas, Viviani(?)
FDJ: Pinot
BORA: P. Sagan, Buchmann
Katusha: Zakarin
Team Sky: Kwiatkowski
Movistar: Valverde, Landa, N. Quintana
EF Education: Uran
UAE: Aru
De Gendt is a given for Lotto Soudal.
Caruso was supposed to be the GC rider of BMC before Porte crashed out of the Tour and I think also Van Garderen is supposed to ride, probably stage hunting.
Trentin should be a given after he missed the Tour.
De la Cruz was promised the leadership for Sky so I think is certain, for Sky also Moscon was supposed to ride but there is his case pending now.
Bahrain will have both Izagirre bros., Visconti and Mohric are also supposed to ride (but Visconti from what I know is not in good terms with the team) and maybe even Nibali brother after his good Tour of Austria.

Anyway I think a lot of riders interested in WC will ride even if coming from the Tour.

I think Fuglsang is also riding as a superdomestique/option B/free rider.

Saw Aru is riding in Wallonia now and then Poland, thats another approach that might help him. Not sure what to expect tho.

Chaves aint riding unfortunately. Lets see if Simon Yates can duplicate what he did in the Giro, Trentin and Ewan should get some free space to hunt stages.

Movistar? Lets see their full team, but they should be stronger in La Vuelta, at least relatively to the competetion.

Ion Izagirre could do something good in the GC I think. Same for Buchmann.

Rider Im looking forward to the most is Enric Mas. He could easily top-5 in this race, I think he is that good already.

If I looked correct, ten riders who finished Giro are also finishing Tour. I wonder if anyone is going for three completed GTs this year. Every year since 2005 has had at least one.
Pretty sure Poels, Pozzo, Froomie, Dumoulin aren't going.

Maybe Ten Dam decides it's his gimmick this year. Seems like a Ten Dam thing to do, and KELDERMAN NEEDS MOUNTAIN SUPPOOORT

This is the one for me. Tour has its thing, but I did enjoy more watching Vuelta last year than TDF (still a rookie when it comes to GT races). I was hoping to see Porte in top condition in TDF but that injury was painful. Hopefully he will recover asap. Yates is a another gem. His Giro ride was so exciting to watch. Then there´s the question over Landa. Who I still prefer as my favorite rider from the hole bunch. I would like to see him tackle more stage wins rather than GC. Also he did win KOM in Giro last year? Couple of other riders I just like to see. Bennett from LottoNL and Caleb Ewan from MS. That so called new generation sprinter.

Why Chaves is not riding?
He has gone through medical tests throughout the last few months and was a possibility for the Vuelta, but his ongoing health problems mean that he will not race until further notice. There is no timetable and the decision to come back will be made when the time is right and he's healthy.

Oh, ok. It must be something serious if they keep doing tests.

Thanks.

Has Lambrecht got a dentist appointment? Why is he only supposed to be riding the first half of the race?

I've given up on Porte not failing to fail somehow so I'd make Simon Yates the favourite. Assuming the Mitchelton bug doesn't strike again, the Vuelta suits him and he'll have a clear leader's role now Chavez is unfortunately out.

And Bennet to continue Jumbo's success with a podium place
