My predictions for the year (page 1) stated: 1. Dumoulin 2. Pinot 3. Aru.
With Froome in the picture, Aru's form questionable (and it has been for two years, really - Black Album?) and Dumoulin '18 still a mystery, it would take many things for my vision to materialize.
1. Froome to either not race Il Giro (willingly or unwillingly - 'nuf said), or him being what he has been so far this year: underwhelming. ho, and there's the Sky curse...
2. Aru: he's not the '14-'15 Aru. What happened? He's showing flashes of brilliance, flashes. Nibali's successor is nowhere near as god as the original. Vincenzo is the shark, Fabio has been a salmon lately: still very strong going upstream/uphill, but dying somewhere along the way. My bet for third doesn't look good.
3. If Tom is Dumourain again, it's game over. But he's my predicted winner, so I feel good. Like last year, he will be ready.
Then we get to Superman and Chaves. Legitimate contenders and super-talented riders. But I have been through this before. To the Spanish speaking cycling fans, I say: you are a tight community, engaged in the sport, but I get lost in the hype. Henao, Betancur...blah, blah, blah.
I have Pinot for second place. For him to win, he needs a two-minute cushion on Dumoulin and Froome in the MTF to mitigate ITT losses., occasional time bonuses could help. But considering what I just saw in Trentino, Tibopino can gain some time on Froome, but Sky will be stronger...probably not two minutes. Same for Dumoulin. I hope that I'm wrong, I just don't see it.
For a podium, Thibaut can beat Superman and Chaves in ITT, plus time-bonuses.
Many plots and sub-plots. All I want is my homie on the podium. He can do it. And if the chips fall right, maybe more. Thibaut looks good in pink
