There's a beer tent at the finish.:)

Take a few euro with you because I don't remember them being complimentary.
Hopefully there will be some left over by the time I roll in.

Thanks for the climbing info. That puts things in perspective quite nicely. A hilly 100km audax will have around 1500m or more, so the same amount of climbing, spread over 150km, should be pretty straightforward. On paper at least...;)

in the words of the locals here: "luvely jubbly"
as for spotting, no real idea what kit yet - will depend on weather... '04 blue OCR1 will most likely be the easiest to spot (i doubt there'd be too many Al bikes out there?)

and wish I could have got in the hills needed.
last weekend was the end of my "hills" if you can call the rises in richmond park hills...
reasonably flat commute all week 18-20kms each way depending on route taken. been trying to push it on the flat though trying to get in the red whenever possible.
tomorrow off, then will head out in suffolk for a good 5hours+ ride on saturday. undulating, but no real "hills" that I know of...

Post-work blast - 28 miles and 800m of climbing @16.2mph. All I have to do now is lose another 10kg before next Saturday.

Did the OP ever get to Surrey?

Good luck guys in any case - let us know how you got on.

It is the amount of riding before the climbs that puts me off doing a monument sportive - they are just so long....

5hrs17m for 146kms
Undulating, with no real climbs or hills. Bloody 10mph head and cross winds for most of it though...
10 of the last 20k's were directly into the wind, so pleased to be able to maintain that effort after such a distance/time

Sounds pretty impressive to me Archie! Are you after a time for RvV or just to do the thing?

no idea on times to be honest as I don't know how much the bergs will wipe out of me. I'm just doing it, but I don't want to embarrass myself out there.
I would like to be able to ride the whole thing and not have to walk any of the bergs - especially the Muur

The Muur has on steep pitch but the Koppenberg and Paterberg are harder (my opinion). If there are not too many guys crashed on these three bergs and if it's dry, you'll be fine.

this is what I'm hoping for.
there are crowds on the Muur for the cyclo, right?
the idea of riding up that with them cheering and encouraging would just be very cool. walking up while they cheer others would, well... suck
are there crowds on the Koppenberg and Paterberg?

the legs didn't like thismorning's commute much either.

Would I be right in thinking that the Muur has better, more regular, cobbles than the Koppenberg or Paterberg? Looks like it from various You Tube videos.

BBC weather forecast only goes up to Friday - so far it's showing rain for Wed/Thurs and cloudy on Friday....

Last year there were small-ish crowds on all three climbs. However it rained nearly all day so I was impressed by how many locals showed up to watch.

Yes. The Muur's cobbles are 'easier' than the other two but it's still bumpy. Just remember, you wind up the Muur and about the time you think you've made it there's a 90 degree left hand turn and you will hit a 20% grade. It's short, but it's steep. It hurts.:)

I did not get this email and I went to the web-site and there is no message of cancellation.

Man I hope what ever you received is not accurate.

EDIT:

It's been gutted. Not a race and the finish is at Arenberg, not Roubaix. It will now be a "hike", whatever the F that means. This sucks.

Putain! A little bit difficult to decipher the ASO pdf. Are they saying that it will be an escorted ride? I really wanted to enter this but for a couple of reason decided against it and plumped for Rapha's UK hommage, The Hell of the North. Looks like the right choice. I'm sure there are going to be a hell of a lot of angry people in Saint Quentin on Saturday morning. More riots for L'Americain to deal with?

yeah, cobbles on the koppenberg are *****es...
It's the one in the Flemish Ardennes I hate the most .... You'll be just fine on the hills if you make sure you're the one going on them first of your group, if you get stuck behind someone, well you'll be going on foot ^^

Apparently the Paris Roubaix Challenge will be a big group ride. Further info suggests it will be the same course as announced earlier but it will not be a timed event.

Too bad.

Headed for LAX in about 1/2 hour. Good luck to everyone riding.

I got this...

Monday 28th March 2011

Dear Paris Roubaix Challenge Rider

We have today received an urgent communication from ASO regarding the Paris Roubaix Challenge.

It has come as a major shock and disappointment that, due to problems with policing in the Roubaix area, The Paris Roubaix Challenge will no longer be a timed sportive event on closed roads.

The new format involves the following major changes:

It is no longer a race, so there will be no timing and no placement classification

The roads will be open to traffic, and traffic rules will be applied

The Velodrome at Roubaix will not be accessible for riders of the event and the event will conclude at the Carrefour de L’Arbre

All other rider support will be in place for refreshments, medical support and mechanical assistance.

We still believe that the event will be worthy of participation,

am trying to find out if you can ride beyond Carrefour just following the race markers like we did last year. we managed to get into the velodrome that way too...

[edit] - at least make it to the velodrome, even if we can't get in, simply because there's a bar at the Roubaix/Lille Metropole clubhouse there
