No O'Connor, no Alarcon... Polanc not good enough. But the top 4 was expected imho.
Certainly 4 of the riders you could previously highlight as one step above the rest.

O'Connor hit the deck pretty hard yesterday, maybe it waals because of the crash.

Very happy to see großschartner win the stage and likely the gc as well. Hast there actually ever been an Austrian winner of a WT stage race? Not that it means much considering the österreichrundfahrt has had better fields but still nice to see an Austrian get a relatively big win especially after all the doping scandals of the last few months

I enjoyed that. Was hoping for Kudus but good ride from Grossschartner. Also, nice ride from mini Roglic.

3 s in a row? So does ß = 2 s?

More or less, it's a bit more complicated than that but because ss and ß are pronounced very similarly and as everyone outside German speaking countries doesn't have the letter ß, ss gets used in translation

Nope, only WT win is Eisel in 2010 Gent Wevelgem.

(Alternatively, in the same way as I object to English football records that only date from 1992:)
Of course there has been: Bulla, Wechselberger and Luttenberger in the Tour de Suisse (1933, 1988 and 1996)

Chapeau Großschartner & Bora - they've been having a good week. Surprised how well Remco did - that was a tough climb.

Sunday's stage 6 Sakarya to İstanbul 172.4 km
start 12.00 Turkish time 11.0 CET TV from 14.00 CET

Little ramp 1.5 km out from finish - Bennett to round off Bora's good week with a win?

Zadrobilek won the Classica San Sebastian in 1987, but of course thats no stage race.

in capital letters, ß turns into a double S even in German actually

Today's stage has no less then four 90 degree turns inside the last km. whoever leads at the flamme rouge should win it. Or it could be the mother of all crashes - hope not!

And ... they're going through the Avrasya Undersea Tunnel(Length5.4km) so let's hope the TV coverage works!

Actually the letter ẞ was introduced last year or so and that is now the big ß as it was really stupid to change how a word is written if you wrote it in capital letters. Maybe that was only changed in Austria though, I don't know tbh.

ah, yeah, you're right, seems like it was introduced in 2017. In Germany now you can use both.

"Schartner" is a name more common in Austria, probably going back to some people living next to a crevice, a [Fels]scharte as it used to be called. In this case, it must have been a large one ;)

5 men out in the break with 2 min 35 secs over the peloton with 100 km to go. Willems got max points at the kom to take the KOM competition.

Bennett won in that way last year, so thats why he did that. He didnt get the gap this year though. If you get a gap with that tricky finale with all the corners and narrow road. You win.

Easy for Ewan in the end today though.

Bennett went long and only 1 little pile up it appears - why were they racing down some back alleyways? The UCI have to have a talk with the organizers ...

Today's stage 1. Ewan, 2. Jakobsen, 3. Bennett, 4. Consonni, 5. Aberasturi

GC - 1. Großschartner, 2. Conti, 3. Kudus.

Loved how Ewan used the QS train to get his his stage win - He'll be looking for this type of stage in the Giro and the TDF.

Word of commendation for the TV production on this one (barring the failure of lighting in the tunnel for the camera following the lead group)

Extended heli shots of final stages, and impressive tracking shots when the pace was high. Although there was the inevitable lingering on the home riders, they picked out main contenders well in the group. National broadcasters of countries that have much more experience of covering cycling could learn from the production here.

If you had to design the finale of a sprint stage to cause complete carnage and injure a bunch of riders you would be hard pressed to do better than that. Last year Bennett decided to avoid the whole mess by going early and removing the mayhem of whole teams fighting for each corner from the equation. It worked. He tried again this year and it did not. But it did at least circumvent the otherwise probable series of crashes. Really that finish is insane and if someone doesn’t turn it into a pursuit rather than a sprint, there will be half a dozen broken collarbones.

Of course after cycling 150 km on 3 lane motorways, they sprint along a footpath with barriers on both sides and 90 degree turns ...AAAARGH!
I hope team mangers complain to UCI & the organizers.
