So...when Oleg was hinting about boycotting the Tour, I thought he was confident he would have a solid gold bargaining chip in the form of the 2014 TdF winner on the TS team.

Now that that's not gonna happen, where does this leave the sport?
Oleg's got plenty of friends?$

I think if they can get OPQS, Garmin, Astana and few others on board the organizers may be willing to listen. Lets just hope that Porte wont win this TDF as SKY would never join them because they are not owned by a business minded people.

Thnx, very interesting.......
and, yes - hopes, prayers, offerings, incantations, amulets, animal sacrifice, whatever it takes! (Well, OK, I do draw the line on animal sacrifice ;))

Was thinking about other answers to team woes. Anyone else see this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MwjdABLkh4&feature=youtu.be

So setting up fan zone on a remote climb, how much money do you think you could make? Not exactly like the OPQS one, but I'm guessing revenue in the thousands per day in beer sales alone and all you'd need is a giant screen and the resources to sell beer and snacks, and of course some people to look after it all. It'd be interesting to see what profit would be.

There could be other experiences used to make money, I know Orica offer a last day tour experience for $1000 and holidays with exclusive access for 4000 pounds for 4 nights during the tour, other teams do similar things. I think training camps and rides, meet and greets dinners, a seat in the team car etc could be offered to make some extra money. Raffled or at a set price.

I honestly think with some work, teams could be almost directly fan funded.

Lot of people argued here that it is impossible to ask money from people as entrance fee. Probably they are right.
But if you ask me I do not see it a real problem. There are places (finish, line, podium, some climbs) where you can set up fan zones and ask money for entrance.
People who are willing to take day off, travel hundreds kilometers, sit 8 hours on the sun or rain to keep their position to see their rider, buying overpriced food in those places will probably be willing to pay the entrance fee in order to have this "seat" secure. Especially if they know that these money will go directly to the "prices" or proportionally to the teams.
I can only speak for myself but I would give “anything “ to get to the special “fan zone” in Harrogate or London, as I travelled from Slovakia and was able to see literally “nothing” on these stages as I came “only “ 5 hours prior to cyclists. My frustration was so huge that I swore it was my last “cycling trip”
Unfortunately it will end up that the organizers will start to ask for money in fan zones and cyclists will get nothing from these money anyway.

I think you can charge entrance but you need to offer something for it. A giant screen may reduce the need to charge an entrance, as people will come to see the race and you can make the money on food and drinks.

Giant screan (with voice on) is a must in paid fan zone.

In Harrogate there were 1 000 000 people, giant screen, overpriced food and I could see and hear "nothing". :(

Alas cycling has a terrible reputation for doping made worse by Armstrongs confession and a consensus of opinion that the problem remains unmsolved. Big business do not want their corporate image connected with cheats and drugs. Remember how fast Liberty pulled the plug a few years back. Cycling is assessed as a poor risk for investment.

Looks like Sagan is going to Astana/Specialized, Or tinkov/Specialized, or whatever the rumor of the day is

Probably one of those ... that being said, and even though it may sound crazy, I truly believe the best option for him would be Trek. Cancellara would be the ultimate teammate, leadout and mentor and they could deliver many major victories working together.

Would work great in theory. But Cancellara doesn't like Sagan. I don't think he would work for him.
