Just because he's won the Classic that suits him best doesn't mean that he won't do his usual of losing a packet in the TT and having a bad day in one of the big mountain stages. Well deserved win today, though.

From Wiki below:

Race 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011
Giro d'Italia 80th – – – 80th – – 17th WD – 4th
Tour de France – – – – – – – – – 8th –
Vuelta a España – – – – 37th 17th – 6th 7th 4th 19th
UCI Road World Championships – – – – – – – 6th 3rd –

Erratic for sure, but I think he can still improve in GT's.

I like and cheer for the less well rounded GC contenders. I like watching purito drop 5 min in a TT just to watch him try and claw it all back. Same goes for the guy who gains 5 minutes in a TT to watch him suffer and try to hold it in the mountains...no one really does that...pity. Purito it is.

purito was on piti's shadow for most of his career. he used to ride the classics as a domestique for valverde then stage hunt at the giro and domestique for valverde again in the vuelta. only in 2010 when he moved to katusha did he start having the freedom he fully deserved so that's why his GT results from before 2010 aren't all that good

That.

Plus, he was doing OK in last year's Vuelta, until he had the crash, which caused him to lose like 10+ minutes on second last (I think) stage, hence he went all the way down to 19th (and lose the points jersey)

Old Carlton Kirby was pretty ecstatic on Eurosport.

I thought he was going to fall of his chair like Kermit the Frog :)
