Did you guys see how Purito was struggling on the Cobertoria to even follow? And also on Ermita, he attacks, got a good gap on Aru, but lost quite some time in the end.

Conclusion: not a super day, only right tactic to only attack in the last km. If he attacked from far out, he would have lost massive time and it was bye bye Vuelta. Now it's still possible, even though it's going to be difficult.

Anyone who says he has ridden cowardly today, doesn't no a single clue about cycling.

+1

He did what he could and considering he looked in difficulty more than once I say Kudos for taking the Rojo! Now do your best Purito, it isn't over until the final day.

At least he can start last and not get passed :).

he has no cojon## to attack from far
Thank god he is doing his best to win the Vuelta instead of demonstrating he has conjon##. The epic hail mary long range attack is a rare creature these days, with domestiques close in power to leaders, good communication and good tactics. Because it's almost always a dumb move.

from far means (for me) attacks with 5 km to the end... this tactic is stupid. he will not win this vuelta

In this case I disagree with you. He looked at the limit. Attacking from 5 kms would have caused him to loose time on the other GC guys or at least not gain anything.

What makes Purito so strong at the super sprint kind of finishes? Is it his lack of weight meaning he can just power up steep gradients?

Also the relation of power and endurance. He can produce extremely high watts but only for a short time.

Physiologically I think he's unique in that there's no other rider who can go so much over threshold during a single effort. He's also always able to put in some sort of sprint to the line, no matter how dead he is. If you look at Cuitu Negru, he was totally dead, but still put in 2s into Contador in the last 50m.

If you compare him to Valverde, I think he's not as anaerobically gifted, but he does have a higher max power output, so in a pure sprint, he'll also beat Purito. Thing is that the steeper it gets, the shorter a pure sprint becomes, and 1km at 10% is really more a sustained maximum effort than a pure sprint.

If it's 1k 15% he would win. At 8%, he would have to contend with the likes of Gilbert too.

Neither would get close. A lightish sprinter or track rider would probably win it. There are loads of riders that could probably ride these gradients faster than Purito when fresh and completely rested; all of them are long dropped though by the MTF or are unable to put out anything close to max power. That's what makes Purito so good; the ability to keep his anaerobic powder dry and remain so explosive after long, tough races.

His terrible TT skills fail him again. Very difficult to be a GC rider with no Time trial skills, especially for grand tours.

But he can still finish on the podium and perhaps win a jersey or two, He'll fight to the end of this Vuelta, it's not over yet.

Just look at how he's built. I think he did an average TT. Not good, not bad.

But podium is sure safe now. And eventually that's the place he deserves.
