I just hope he recovers well, and stays enjoying racing. I can imagine that after so many disappointmens this year, you get sick of the sport.

doesn't look good....

Unfortunately I think he will go down in history as one of those great riders who never won a grand tour. Always close, but not quite getting it. He is only getting older, and competition is only getting harder. I'm really bummed with today's outcome....:(

If he skips Tour and focuses solely on Vuelta he should win it. We'll come fresher than most, and being fresh in Vuelta is basically everything.

So, do we think he'll opt for the Tour? Personally, I've changed my mind now and I think he should go wholeheartedly for the Vuelta-Worlds.

So maybe a schedule like (roughly):
Dauphine / Tour de Suisse
Österreich-Rundfahrt
San Sebastian
Vuelta a Burgos
Vuelta a Espana
World Championships
Lombardia

Probably La Vuelta, as the Tour de France is going to be really tough to win (SKY with Froome, Wiggins, and Porte? Geeez)

Tour would be a fool's errand. Really hope he focuses on the Vuelta, though sponsor pressure could be there given the magnitude of the Tour.

I really cannot believe he already broke 2 ribs in the Amstel. It's impossible to ride the Giro with that, and especially be competitive (at the stage to Viggiano).

I opt for him to do the Vuelta, and try to win a GT for the last time. Worlds, Lombardia, Turin, Emilia. Plenty of nice races left!

If he does the Tour, i would like him to see hunting stage victories, just like Perez Cuapio did back in the Giro:) Not trying to ride a GC again, because it only gives you more stress. Right at the moment, he just needs to find joy again on the bike, and to show he still can race like back in 2010.

The biggest reason I'm a Puritofan must be his interviews or his words after a day of racing. Wether it's him losing, winning or crashing. What an class act.

Reading this interview breaks my heart.

Just a quote from the man.
“It hurts to leave the Giro, but there is no other option,” said Joaquim Rodriguez. “The crashes were bad for all of us. The road was very slippery and we were going 60K an hour. Just touching your brakes was enough to crash.

"But that is a risk we always take. It is part of our job to try to be in the front to fight for the victory. I really cannot blame the organization or the local roads.

"After the crash I got back on my bike immediately, more full of aggression and determination, but after a while I clearly felt what the problem was, as I could not breathe anymore.”

No complaining, not blaiming anyone. Just being the awesome guy he always is, despite breaking 1 more rib and his thumb and having to abandon his big goal this season... the Giro.

He won't win the Giro, but in my book he's still a champion through and through. Hope he can finish off the season strong. Allez Purito! Go win the Vuelta and worlds now!

I don't think he has any chance on the WC course (it's just not that hard), but that means that he doesn't need to hold anything back in the Vuelta (which it seemed last year both he, Nibbles and Valverde did, at least peak wise), which should give him an even bigger advantage over the Tour/Vuelta riders (Contador and Valverde).

Really pathetic quoting myself from five months ago. No regerts.

Actually I'm kinda hoping he'll get slightly injured before the Giro so he won't be able to ride it, but Rodriguez knows his own body best...

The Giro is lost for good now, his crash in the Amstel was an omen. Hopefully the setbacks will help him decide to go all out at the Vuelta and the Ponferrada Worlds.

Fireworks guaranteed. Vamos Purito.

Looks like he will be taking part in TDF if everything goes well. Let's hope he heals in time and ready to rub shoulder with contador, froome, valverde and nibali. The more.. the merrier.. :D

"The Vuelta a España was and is the next big goal for Joaquim Rodriguez. However, in the light of the recent situation, his participation in the Tour de France cannot be excluded. Anyway, everything will depend on the recovery process of “Purito” and his general race preparation progress.

He'll solo to yellow on stage 2. :cool:
I haven't mapped the stage myself yet, but I'm quite certain there isn't a mur in the last km.

~~~
If he does the Tour he will probably at best end 3rd again and miss his chance to win the Vuelta. Could always win Fleche Lombardia if they keep the same route as the last couple of years though.
If I'm not mistaken there is a very steep short climb in the end of stage 2.
