His stage win in 2012 was much more impressive than what he has done this year.

He just won that stage due to a perfectly timed attack, when Riblon and Pozzo were reeled in and eveyone was looking at each other. Really good, but not due to the fact he was better then the rest (like he was on Chieti in 2013).

I'm just saying that if you're rode such a poor Tour of Oman, but you are already capable of finishing 3rd on Terminillo, you are in a perfect build up to be 100% in Liege.

He was probably ~8th strongest or so on Terminillo. He will be fine for CataLOLya, but he simply doesn't have the level to be among the strongest in Liege.

You can' say he doesn't have the level anymore to be one the strongest riders in LBl. This is not a Purito at his top yet, that's just obvious. For me, it's surprising he's already capable of finishing 3rd on a pure climb given the fact he's not at his best.

And i think it's weird to compare Terminillo with a Roche or La Redoute. Terminillo isn't a climb which Purito really suits. It has never been. But the hills in the classics are Purito his terrain, so the fact Purito already shows on a climb like Terminillo he's there with the best, he will be even better in a race like LBL.

After taking another look at the route, I think Valverde will win Catalunya. Purito should get 2nd though. With the introduction of bonus seconds in the race and the reduced sprints in stage 2 and 3, I think Valverde should be able to recover what he'll lose on the uphill sprint.

For the first time in his career, Purito perhaps wants a extra mountain stage ;)

With a stage win however, i would be already really happy.

The positive thing is, that he will start now in Pais Vasco. If he recovers well ofcourse. With a finish on the Alto de Aia, he will get a 100% chance for a stage win.

And the route really suits him too.

Too bad he's ill and doesn't get to ride his home tour. But I guess for his build up and for his results it doesn't really matter whether he races Catalunya or País Vasco; both have routes that are very good for him.

I have looked at the route of this years PV, and stage 3 to Zumarraga has the same final like the one back in 2011. Which means the riders have to tackle the really steep Alto de la Antigua, where Purito past Horner near the top in 2011 and eventually won the stage in a four men sprint.

So with the stage to Zumarraga, stage 4 to Arrate and the stage to the brutal Alto de Aia, this is a Pais Vasco which is just great for Purito. With a little bit of luck, 2 stage wins are possible.

Do you think he will finish on the podium? I do not. I also think it will affect his classics campaign.

No, because in the TT (especially the first 11 flat km's) he will lose too much time to the likes of Quintana, Kwiatkowski and Costa.

How do you mean affect his classics campaign? Just riding Pais Vasco?

Yeah, instead of doing Catalunya. That and the illness itself.

In 2012 he also didn't rode Catalunya, but winning two stages and finishing 2nd in Pais Vasco and winning his only Ardennes classic to date. In 2010 he also rode PV and finishing on the podium in FW and Amstel.

If he recovers quick, let's say in 3/4 days, he can do some very good training for more then a week. In that case, he should be fine for PV and the classics.

Purito is already doing some training in Tenerife, with (based on the picture) i think Vicioso and a 3rd Katusha rider (could be Moreno).

Yeah, finally is back :) The Ardennes are waiting and then hopefully a good TDF for him.

There is very few races with very steep but not too long mtf or climbs near the finish that are suited to his "one-trick-ponny" style.

No GC chances for Purito at any major GT, he is just a stage hunter and everyone should accept that.

And how then he has been the World No.1 for 2 years? Certainly not by being a one-trick pony

God, some people are really too stupid. In his prime days, he was a great GC rider as well.
