landis super stage.
Contador gap attack.Finnestre 05

That one has gotten lost in all of the praise given to his attack on Alpe D' Huez, but that was an awesome and persistent attack.

EDIT: For me it's Contador's ride on Verbier. With all the drama coming out of Astana that year and during that Tour, I can watch his attack over and over again (he simply pedals away like the others are standing still)

Most tour de france stages over the past 6 years (except 2009, I dont have the DVD) I have watched at least 5 times. Last years Grenoble TDF TT I have watched 10-15 times.

Too many to mention but recently (maybe subconciously anticipating a ban) Contador on Etna and Contador on Angliru. Simply poetry in motion.

The Tiralongo thank you has also figured high. Pure class and control from AC.

I've watched that a few times, but that's about it though. I've watched on youtube several times seeing Samu attack on a descent at the '06 Vuelta to get the stage win. He just held on, and if the finish had been a few hundred metres longer, the peloton would have caught him.

Other honourable mentions include Alpe d'Huez, Gap (where Beloki crashed), and Luz Ardiden from the 2003 Tour.

+1
Also the finish of 2007 tour stage 3 - Canc mugging the sprinters teams and riding the entire peloton off his wheel in the lask km. So unexpected but great to see.
Pantani's attack and stage win at Les Deux Alpes in 1998 when he put 9 minutes into Ullrich - atrocious weather, the favourite cracking spectacularly, a 'multi mountain attack' rather than waiting for the final climb - the Pirate doing what he did best.
Contador up Angliru in 2008 - the first cycling race/stage that I ever watched and consequently got me hooked on cycling.

In no particular order:

Stage 17, Tour 06: Say what you want, but that was the most epic stage win on this side of the millennium. Landis pouring water on himself like mad, running Sinkewitz into the ground, the field behind disintegrating on the final climb. Can still remember the feeling of watching a significant piece of history while it was happening.

Fedaia, Giro 08: The most beautiful climb on earth. Again, say what you want. It's always fascinating to watch Sella gain time over the pack on the last climb, and I love brave escapes in the mountains. The action among the favourites behind is also really good.

Finestre/Sestrieres, Giro 05: I'm hoping Rujano will gain the necessary time everytime I watch it. It has the coolest climb on earth in Finestre, a breakaway attempt by the GC guys, Savoldelli's beautiful descent, and the drama on the last climb. There's also something about winning a mountain stage in the climber's jersey (goes for Fedaia as well).

In my list of heavy rotation stages, there are also various Basso exploits from the 06 Giro, the entire 07 Tour, some of the dramatic stages from 07 Giro (love those Saunier Duval 1-2s), the Sastre stage in 08 Tour, Angliru 08 is very fascinating, Valverde's Ventoux ride in the Dauphiné, and of course some of the great Tour stages with Armstrong, Ullrich and/or Vinokourov. I especially like the one after the 03 mid-race time trial, where Ullrich attacked with some serious determination, even though it didn't really work out.

There, that should just about cover my main favourites :)

Greywal vs Bauer 84 Olympics

Race was in my back yard and we were well positioned at finish and could traverse hill to see one of the climbs

Both were Epic despite Boycott

I like watching the Mens clip here and hearing quotes like "Alexi was suspended just last week" and Alexi looks bonked... from Eric Heiden and LeMond. Both a mouth full of marbles

Also check out the length of alexi's head tube. Big steel frame

2002 Paris Roubaix

Brutal. Is there a full version of this anywhere?

Another race Ive watched on multiple occasions is the 2009 World Championship. Total team effort by the Australians to bring the field back together. Then the Italians and Spanish panicked. Once again Cancellara gets the raw end of the deal as he attempts to get away from the front. Evans descends like a demon after conserving energy up hill and then on the other side nobody has any energy to go with him. It's like he's surprised they are all ******ed.

Apologies for Sherwen's commentating:

Edit: Watching this again, am I out of my mind by saying Gilbert is a silent teammate of Evans here? We know they were working together fearlessly around that time. Gilbert does not seem to pull once, just sandbags Cancellara.

Rigoberto Uran going on a kamikadze style attack, it looks like he might make it, can he... can he??? Nooo he hits a 24% wall and slows down to a crawl. Who's that behind him? It's J-Rod, Velits and Nibali going three-wide side by side. Is one of them going to take it??? But wait, what's that carrot-looking thing behind them? It's Igor Anton, and Anton explodes and takes the stage!!!!

LLS also played a part ( good team tactics )

I watched the final ITT of last years TDF quite a bit. I also watched the 2010 WC at least 10 times. M-SR/ RvV last year was good as well.

I like Vinos' stage on the Champs and Cancellaras' in 07 where they both thwart the sprinters.

Lots, but for some reason this comes to mind:

Basso winning before Armstrong on La Mongie (stage 12 in the 2004 Tour), prepared by an attack by Sastre.

This thread should now have a poll.
For me Hautacam 2000, La Mongie 2004, Courchevel and Sestriere 2005, Tignes 2007 and the one with Bernards in 2009. Plus Avoriaz 2010 - for Armstrong, for sure.

What's the deal with Verbier stage? He took only 40 seconds to 2'nd place. He didn't "destroy the field", no way. I know he had a great sprm, sprq, qjdoqdwq, best pedaling in the history etc. But for me, it was the least exciting stage in the Alps that year. Can't be compared with Romme stage and Petit St. Bernard stage. So why so much talk about Verbier. I'm open to be fanboy of this stage, but explain it to me.

i guess because it was one of the fastest climbs in tour de france history.plus it was a stage long-awaited to end all the contador-armstrong drama.it was fascinating stuff for me anyway, too bad it was so short:eek:

I don't know if there is but I've still got Eurosports coverage of the race on VHS although the tapes now worn out a bit from me watching it.

It had everything. Rain, mud, George Hincapie falling into a ditch, the emergence of Boonen as a top rider and a sublime ride from Museeuw

Can't find this on you tube.

I remember the ind. time trial though, and the doco where Bruyneel is gloating as he passes Riis (sic) in the car.
