Unlike Whiteboytrash, I welcome them to cycling.

They'll be the best equipped team in the peloton.... able to plug in their ipods no matter what type of wall socket they come across! :D

Honestly though how is this any weirder than sponsors who make concrete powder (Fassa Bortolo, Mapei)? I say I don't give a a flying c**p if you're Morocco's number 1 producer of twine; if you want to help fund pro cycling where your company is based doesn't matter.

Not to those who do business in Kazahaabsjslnklnstan or trade in Oil.

to promotoe kazhak government and businesses they sponsor a cycling team led by a belgian, a spaniard, and a couple of americans.

they also established that they have difficulty paying staff salaries on time. this is their way of demontsrating to the rest of the world that they are players in the mulitbillion dollar oil industry?

i'd say that was an odd partnership.

French will not allow 3 American teams in Le TOur. This means Garmin is out

Although they might not let Lance in

A Sponsor is a sponsor not sure how this in "embarrassing" clearly one has never been a dedicated cat one knocking on doors and writing letters for cash to race. Dude is waiting for Zipp to call him I guess. Tool

I used to work for CSC and left a bit after we dropped the sponsorship, we were told that overall cycling sponsorship is not expensive compared to other ways of getting your message out there, especially compared to other sports.
I guess RadioShack looked at the chance of working with Lance, and figured that it might give them an increase in their market share against Best Buy for (a lot) cheaper than traditional advertising.
I guess they'll be concentrating most of their time on the US PRO circuit, plus the Grand boucles, so that most of the eyeballs that see their name on jerseys are American.
I've heard the same thing. When Columbia came on with HighRoad last year, they said that the budget for the cycling team would be the same as what Bud spends on Super Bowl ads. One year of sponsorship and all the free press that comes along with it, or a handful of minutes? Seems like a good deal.

Personally, I say "Welcome aboard!" As a near victim of the economy's impact on cycling, (the casinos in Philly stepped in to save the biggest one day race in the US) I've been happy to read about sponsors extending contracts. This is better, because a new company is showing that it can be done. Of course having the biggest name in American cycling really does help. I was only busting on the usual equipment sponsors that we all know will be included.

No way Garmin is out if Wiggins can hang on, or Columbia is out with their record of wins.

My guess is that the Tour could use this to snub LA and keep them out, unless they somehow put a monster of an early season together. Much will depend on the names of the roster that start to leak out here shortly.

I wonder what will happen with the ProTour licensing next year? The deadline was three days ago.

Maybe Vino's Astana will be refused a license and Radio Shack will take their place?

My understanding is that the pro-tour licence is held by JB and Astana is the current sponsor of his team.

I go to Radio Shack whenever I need a component to fix any thing electronic. It is the only place I can get resistors, transistors, diodes etc.

This is silly. There's plenty of resellers out there which are much cheaper even if you include S&H. If you don't care about delivery speed, I'd recommend to have a look at (among many others) Futurlec which operates out of Thailand. They probably have children sorting out and packing your components for a few cents/hour, but look at the prices!

maybe Wiggo goes with Lance?

I think an LA snub is in the making

if based on The Badgers comments of late alone.

LA has basically invited himself to the dance already and the French wont dig that at all

LA's celebrity is good for the tour's bottom line. Don't hold your breath for him to be snubbed.

Hinault does not represent the tour or French interests. His conflict with LA is personal.

Also they'll likely have at least two GC contenders. LA, LL, and who knows where AC will end up b/c JB still holds his rights. I wouldn't bet my hard earned cash on LA or LL but they have to be considered contenders. Look for 3 American teams next year. (Isn't Astana USPS/Disco anyway?)

Can anyone say paradigm shift?

How much money will the team have? Who can they pay? Before you get all too excited someone should look at the budget. The last time I checked, Radio Shack didn't own all that many profitable oil and gas fields.
