His surname is in fact female name in Polish and Czech I suppose. There was even very popular cartoon Pszczólka Maja (Bee Maja) in 80s (in countries of Eastern Block).

After Friday's stage I tweeted him with proper pronunciation and now he's definitely better.

Riis said they're going to grab another stage win in Pyrenees and fight for polka dot jersey. What's funny, "polka" means female citizen of Poland :)

And yes, his surname is also a diminutive of women's name Maja. Like former XC World Champion Maja Włoszczowska.

The funny thing was that Paul, who decently pronounce names, was doing it as well after he heard Phil. Contagious.

I've watched few Majka interviews after he won, and in all of them he says: "the Tour is NOT over". Gotta love this guy.

Btw, how do you pronounce Rafal?

Not sure how to explain it properly. If you are asking specifically about last letter it is pronounced sames as 'w' in wow. 'Raf' you just pronounced the same as in Gi'raff'e. Hell, I am terrible at explaining this stuff :D

His name is Rafał - the last letter is L with a line. In polish we pronounce it like a W in a "wow" or if German is somehow closer to you - Rafau. It's obviously polish analogue of Raphael. In the team guys call him per Rafa.

The guy got some guts. I hope his bad luck is gone and the stage he won will give him more confidentiality in his potential and abilities. He is really humble and quite bloke, but I would never say this after saying his riding up to Risoul. Other polish rider and Peter Sagan gregari - Maciej Bodnar, just wrote on his facebook that they were talking before the start and Rafał said to him: If I am going to escape today, I will destroy them! :D

I will do my best to provide some more insights about Rafał if I get something special. You may also check oldest and biggest polish website about cycling we are running with friends: rowery.org It's in Polish, but we post international newses about polish cyclist also in English, and if not, google translator should help you :)

Also, his teammate from Saxo Pawel Poljanski was quoted saying that Majka was ****ed off after 13th stage and said he is going to win tommorow......too bad he didnt say that before stage. Odds must have been around 51 to 1 :D

Anyway, I think tommorow it's Rogers' turn and Rafal (no polish signs on my keyboard) will target stage 17 and if Rodriguez is not there that will mean polka dot jersey)

For stage 13 his odds in my betting side were 41/1,for stage 14 it was 19/1 iirc:)

Yes, you are correct mostly, only that "j" is not silent, it is like last part of english "y" in word "my", as a result it is like you said my-ka, but this english "y" includes polish "a" and "j".

Just add "k" and you have it correct.

Thanks for that, Forvo is such a simple tool for these things and getting someone's name right is really the least level of respect they're due for the efforts they make. Hushovd, Sagan, Majka, if you're not sure how to say it and it's your job to say it on TV then go and look it up, don't just rotate between three or four different possibilities. Gary Imlach nails them all so there're no excuses.
