Someone needs to do something about the KOM jersey. It's an aberration at this point.

Lenny Martinez farming it like it's a video game level up system on the first cols of every mountain stage - only to then drop back into the bunch and the leave the Tour empty handed anyway - is just a joke.
This Im 100% on board with. Its a shame that Pog won it without never targetting it, but at the same time, it would have been even worse with Lenny tbh given the sticky bottle. But I'd much rather that a good, opportunistic climber that targets the jersey wins it in general.

There were some individually cool moments within an ocean of apathy for me. I'm more happier that it's over than that I got to watch it.
That is exactly the same feeling I have. Usually there is an empty feeling of "what now?" when the tour is over. But I was actually looking forward to the end and couldnt even be bothered with last stage (until I saw fast forward/skips today).

I'm also usually optimistic, but this tour was for me the worst in years to view, saved a bit by that last stage.

It was too long until the mountains, and then the gaps blew out too quickly - then the GC battle just died. It's insane to me that the GC riders didn't win a single stage in the alps. I p would have preferred domination to total nothingness in that last week. Like Pogacar I just lost interest, in part because it seemed the GC guys did too. Its hard to stay up till 2am to watch a mountain stage when stuff all actually happens.

We did also lose too many riders along the way.

On the plus side there was a good battle for third, there were some good classic style stages and the last stage was great. Some good human interest stories too.

So a 5

Some hot takes:
  • The last week's tactics was so chaotic and bizarre, which made it memorable in its own way.
  • Pogacar became a tactical and conservative rider in the 3rd week.
  • Vingegaard was as ever too cautious to put it on the line.
  • Lipowitz is the new the diesel climbing machine.
  • Roglic lost his mind and risked a podium and white jersey for RB.
  • Healy vs V. Paret-Peintre battle on Mont Ventoux was a classic mountain battle
  • Evenepoel doesn't have what it takes to compete with Pogacar and Vingegaard in a grand tour.
  • Arensman was courageous and deserved his two stage wins.
If I see someone announcing hot takes on here I'm expecting something different. This forum has standards!

Not a single bad take

I mean it wasn't a especially exciting Tdf as the more or less a long transport until the first mountain stage and then it was more or less over. Still so much better than recent Giro´s Ill give it a 5- I had fun but was rarely at the age of my seat.

Edit: say "more or less" one more time, i dare you :)

3/10. this tour just felt really weird to me, like everybody knew nobody had a chance to beat Pogacar. stage 18 looked like it was going to be awesome and it just died out on the road. i didn't think there were many good breakaway stages either, those too felt kinda weird to me. almost like some of the stages were fixed.

Boring GC battle, not very good battles for Green or Polka either, but quite a lot of good stages in my eyes:

Stage 1: Echelons, Remco and a bunch of other secondary GC riders got dropped. Good stuff.
Stage 2: MvdP beat Pogacar. Cool battle.
Stage 3: Classic sprint stage, meh.
Stage 4: Very cool steep hill just before finish. MvdP lost sprint against Pogacar. Not a bad stage.
Stage 5: TT with wind. Evenepoel won, Pogacar good, Visma bad. Not bad action for a TT stage isolated, but decided much of the GC battle already.
Stage 6: Good breakaway stage with an insanely strong break. Long solo, so not very intenense excitement for the win, but impressive still. MvdP taking back yellow with 1s, that was exciting.
Stage 7: Pogacar easy. A bit of a dull stage and Almeida crashed.
Stage 8: Bit of a strange sprint stage, but yeah a pretty boring sprint stage.
Stage 9: MvdP and Rickart made a boring sprint stage very exciting.
Stage 10: Great breakaway stage with a good battle for the stage win and Healy taking yellow.
Stage 11: A really great breakaway stage with a superstrong second break of MvdP, WVA etc almost catching up. Superclose sprint a deux for the win. Great stuff. Pogacar crashed, not great but luckily no impact on the race.
Stage 12: Tour over. Pogacar demolition. Insanse first 3-4 kilometers of Hautacam. A bit meh from an entertainment POV.
Stage 13: MTT. Not really a fan of that concept. No excitement about stage win, the most exciting things were speculations about equipment. Meh..
Stage 14: Great breakaway win from Arensman. Johannessen in the break as a GC threat (not for podium) made it also a bit interesting. Generally a decent stage.
Stage 15: Quite an interesting break stage until Wellens got the gap. Bit underwhelming.
Stage 16: Pretty epic stuff on Ventoux with the very intenste breakaway battle where Politt went nuts, then a small break with some strong climbers in Mas and Arensman getting a gap on the big break into Ventoux. Then Mas solo for a long time, then the games between Healy and VPP. Behind there were also some proper attacks from Vingegaard. This stage was absolutely brilliant.
Stage 17: Lame sprint stage with big crash.
Stage 18: Strong break with Roglic and Gall, full attacks on Madeleine then the very strange stuff in the valley. Lipowitz attack turned out to be stupid, but it was for a while very interesting. Great solo win by O'Connor and Onley made the battle for third looking very interesting. Honestly a great stage .
Stage 19: Shortened which ruined a bit, but Roglic made a fun attack, there were some intersting dynamics for the lower GC placements with Uno-X dropping Vaquelin and the last climb was pretty intersting with the Arensman attack, Vingegaard and Pogacar trying to make each other lose and the battle of third lived well into the final 3 kilometers with a lot of people giving Onley a good chance to drop Lipo based on what happened the day before. Arensman managed to stay away. All in all a pretty good stage, even if it is always a disappointment when the best riders are holding back.
Stage 20: Interesting break, "Gr. Jegat" and all that. Some good break action with Sweeneys attack, the stupidity of Wellens/Jorgenson and then the stupidity of Stewart/Vandenbroeck. Great win from Groves, good stage.
Stage 21: Neutralization of not, the final 40-50 kilometers were great entertainment. Not a fan of Wout, but very impressed by his attack and Pogacar rode like a true Champion. Great stage!

7/10

7 overall
+1 Pogacar winning overall
+1 Pogacar continuing his stage and KoM winning domination
+1 Visma getting egg on their face for the overall win
+1 WVA win
+1 Philipsen win
+1 Lipowotz’s showing his great shape and CdD wasn’t a fluke
+1 MVDP win and yellow
+2 Merlier and Milan showing their speed
+3 more breakaway wins and GC top 10s from breakaway

-5 Philipsen, MVDP, Evenepoel, and Almeida all having to withdraw

I gave it a 4. If I could change my vote, I might tick it up to a 5. The GC battle (for the win) never materialized, as expected. Roglic wasn't in form (though it wouldn't have mattered for the win, but might have affected the podium if he was at his best). Crashes and illness took out too many great riders. Still, there were some bright moments. Stage wins by guys getting their first TDF victory and nice breakaway stories helped. I really enjoyed Ben Healy's exploits. Nice to see Wout return to form on the final stage, which was very entertaining. Lipowitz and Onley were bright spots for the podium battle and bode well for future GC battles in grand tours and stage races.

I will give it 6. In the first part of the race the tension was building up nicely: some good hilly stages and the competition: MVP vs Pogacar vs Vingegaard. Hautacam kinda killed the race though. Visma tried hard on Ventoux and Loze stages (good ones) but one always thought that it's unlikely to overcome 4+ minute gap. From sporting point of view there were quite a lot of decent/good stages (my rating: 7/10) but the GC was set too quickly (that's why the score is lowered).

6/10

The last week was pretty disappointing but at least the last stage was a great one (hopefully will set a new precedent) and the first two weeks were pretty good, lots of fun hilly stages.

Sadly the GC was decided in the middle of the second week and Van der Poel's withdrawal robbed us from a great green jersey fight.

6 it was ok, but no particulary great tour. No real contention for the win and to much time gaps between the riders from spot 1 to 3. Also disappointing that Evenepoel was not at his best and that Vingegaard didn´t even win one single stage.

At least we had riders like Healy, Arensman, Abrahamsen, Wellens and a few others who were very agressive and made the tour watchable.

stages i really enjoyed:
stage 11
ventoux
stage 18 until the valley after madeleine
stage 21

weak

Gave it a 6.

Likes:
  • Pogi is a great and entertaining champion who races his tail off
  • Loved the heavy course
  • Some really nice breakaways
  • Last stage was one of the best stages I've ever seen
Dislikes:
  • Uncompetitive. I want rivalries, not domination
  • Roglic didn't do anything particularly interesting in GC
  • Almeida gone was too early
  • Remco really disappointed
Last stage was so good I'm tempted to give it a 7.

Once again Pogacar (and Vinegard) have produced an absolute masterclass. Once again they have partied like it's 1985. Once again they have proven all those cluless new school fans wrong who had toll us for so long that you cant create gaps in the mountains today unless it is some murito goat trial. Once again they have shown us what an absolute dark age the mit 00s and 10s were.
The route had its obvious short comings, but the Worlds best riders delivered and made the best out of it. I dont see how you can ask for much more. Of course, from a German's perspektive Lipowitz was a huge icing on the cake.
9/10.

6/10
Really enjoyed the first bit up to the MTT, which I had assumed was a warmup ready for a killer final week. But then I feel like I missed a secret week only the riders knew about, because nothing happened in week three of any consequence. It was as confusing as it was annoying.

I also loved the idea of the Montmartre stage but then only a handful of riders tried to animate the race. The rest may as well have climbed off and gone home. Big props for Pogacar and Co for making a race here. Thumbs down to those who just pootled round.

It seemed like there were fewer crashes than normal which was nice.

The GC action just fizzled.

I got 2nd in my fantasy league which usually would leave me with warm feelings but honestly there were just too few surprises and twists and turns, so I gave it a 3. The last stage would have been cooler if it came earlier in the race. Pog was too tired because he was forced to race every day, against Wout who could save it for the end, and MVDP who couldn't be arsed to even finish the race. (I mean seriously, riding with a broken wrist is OK but pneumonia is not?) The average speed this year was insane but did not lead to a better spectacle. I don't necessarily think the organizers did much wrong, aside from ruining the last mountain stage. When you backload everything, the riders get too tired, but if you frontload, there's potentially less suspense. The only change I'd wish for is smaller teams/fewer teams as I like to imagine that would cause more chaos and force more panache.

May have been spoiled by this year's Giro.

edit: taking the GC out of the last stage made it less interesting IMO, of course you don't want a wet cobbled crash to ruin 3 weeks of work, but some sort of compromise like capping GC changes at 2 minutes would be something to think about. Not that there's any precedent for that which I'm aware of.
