If a fan is not interested in a race unless it has one of the biggest stars in it, that kind of person is usually more a fan of winning than they are a fan of the sport.I think you’re conflating the fact that stars attract non- fans looking to see a spectacle with the fact the they attract true fans as well, who just want to see the best at what they do best. Both things can be true at the same time,
I mean, the Giro once paid the biggest star in cycling not to turn up so that people might get to see a race rather than a procession.
