Don't forget, I'm relatively young so the only Austrian rider I have seen in cycling races, who was internationally successful, was Bernhard Kohl, although you hear year after year that Austria has many juniors, who could become very successful one day.Mayomaniac said:Come on, Mühlberger could do something, Patrick Konrad was 10th on the gc in Abu Dhabi and in Oman, he could surprise a few people in one week races.Gigs_98 said:Whoever will break out next year, I'm very sure it wont be an Austrian![]()

I a recent interview Vino himself said that he expects big things from Lutsenko in 2016.Vino attacks everyone said:Lutsenko to take the next step after a "meh" season. Thought he was gonna do very well this year after a really strong Vuelta 14, but didn't really do as well as i'd hoped. 5+ stage wins and "up there" in a few major classics is my prediction

Clearly this generation was something else, and clearly I can't see anyone stepping up from the current lot of 23-27 year olds.
Anybody further down the road?
Well, AC and AV are exceptional riders. In all likelyhood they won't be replaced anytime soon.metaCYCLE said:Maybe this deserves its own thread, but who do you think will step up from the Spanish scene to replace the galactic generation that they still have now (AC, VV, JR, SS). He's riding for Jumbo, so preety much failure.
( and aside that not much, he got beat by Paterski in Crotian MTF, Paterski is hardly a climber, and sure he beat Nieve in Slovenia but that was his biggest peak of the season plus massive motivation, hardly says much, will be a decent climber, but nothing more, could win Tour of Turkey or something)

the new mikel landa. in a few years.
I can't see anyone directly replacing Valverde, Contador, Purito, Samu, Freire and Flecha but I can see the riders you mentioned, plus a few others taking a similar amount of wins, even though they probably won't be as big.Valv.Piti said:Hugo Koblet said:Well, AC and AV are exceptional riders. Ruben Fernandez, Juanjo Lobato, Ion Izaguirre and Mikel Landa. There are probably some other decent riders as well I have forgot. Unsure about Marc Soler. None of these apart form Landa has that 'star potential', but hopefully Ruben Fernandez will evolve into a nice top-10 GC rider eventually.
But in terms of directly replacing those 4, particularly Valv and Contador, they are those kind of one in a generation-type riders.

Spain may slide a few spaces in the nations rankings for a while but I doubt that they will go into freefall.

Down to 4th or 5th will be quite a freefall for them, need several mid to late 20's riders to make a big leap, like Landa this year, to limit the fall, younger generation are too far away. The days when AV, JR, and AC trolling each other in the front group are annoying sometimes, but what memories of a long golden age they will be, that Spain will likely not see again for quite awhile.
