That twit shows why he is such a muthurhucker. If you have to tweet that pile of Sh%% to boost your ego then you are full of sh%%,

perhaps

you could relax with the insults
and vulgar language

pretty strong words
pretty extreme stance

for a person you do not know

We may not know the True Little Richie Porte, the man behind the mask. He might be the nicest person ever. We don't know.

But we do know quite a bit about Little Richie Porte, the character he plays in the Tour de France, in interviews and on twitter.

You can take the boy out of Tassie, but...

Perhaps the person he intimidated was a seven year old boy, because it's quite hard to imagine a fully grown adult being frightened by any climbing specialist.

I note, by the way, that Richie's height is listed at 1,72 metres, which seems a bit unlikely.

Probably has The Smirk going even as he threatens random spectators on his way to the Magic Motorhome.

Is Porte going to be Sky's version of Landis? Could well be. I can't wait to see him do a testosterone-fuelled rage ride to regain yellow when he's dropped in the mountains as captain for Phona... I mean BMC... next year.

I remember Wiggins once saying that no sceptic would ever suggest he is doping, to his face, and people laughing at the idea of Wiggins physically intimidating people who would say that.

Then again maybe Wiggins wasn't a climbing specialist in 2012. He was just a tter who got lucky that every single climbing specialist wasn't at the Tour that year (or the Dauphine, or Romandie, or Paris Nice). However in his book Froome suggests Wiggins was a climbing specialist since he identifies himself as a climbing specialist then calls pre 2009 Wiggins someone with almost identical talents to himself.

Pahahahahaha! That's hilarious. Pre '09 Wigans was around the 5th-10th best TTer in the world, while pre Vuelta 11 Froome crashed into commissaires and got whipped by Teklehaimanot at the African Champs.

Pre '09 Wigans couldn't climb a speed hump, at least pre Vuelta Froome lasted long enough to get a mention when he was dropped.

No offense, but all y'all claiming you would not be intimidated by Porte sound like you don't get out much.

1. A pip squeak like Kostya Tszyu looks less intimidating in terms of stature than Porte but he'd knock you out without thinking. What someone looks like is really irrelevant to the threat you would perceive. At a basic psychological level, I have seen videos of bears running from cats.
2. Consider the scenario: it's highly unlikely any pro cyclist is going to be left to defend himself on a mountain at the Tour. There's enough fans everywhere to back him up - it's not just the cyclist you're mindful of.
3. It's Porte's tweet. Who knows how the spectator felt / looked?
4. An aggressive anyone will give anyone pause at least initially. I am guessing Porte rode past, not stopped for an extended chat.

My bad, he's talking about 2009 wiggins, not pre 2009 wiggins.

Which is even worse though since wiggins came 4th in that Tour, and Froome thinks they are similar.

"When I watched the (2009) Tour de France on television, I kept my eye on Bradley Wiggins. I was interested in his approach. He was lively and lithe in the saddle and he time-trialled well and competed decently in the mountains. I felt our strengths were similar".

Given Sky's history there is about a 75% chance he just made up the story on the way.

@richie_porte that'd be the steroids making you angry.

https://twitter.com/richie_porte/status/621361125796499457

I just literally spat my coffee out laughing at that, both LRP's hubris and Ferrari's response.

I agree with others that Porte will eventually be the one that blows the wheels off this whole sorry spectacle because he's just too dumb not to. He seems to have that same feeling of security/invicibility about him that characterised the Postal approach.

I remember when he revealed he'd beaten the Dawg's own Armstrong-beating time up Madone by a further 29 seconds (allegedly 29:40 lest we forget) my first thought was 'even if you had done that, what kind of idiot would actually put it out in the public domain'. Being a minute faster up Madone than the most dope-fuelled rider in the history of the sport isn't really a claim to fame that any pro with half a brain would want these days but he just doesn't seem to be able to rein himself in.
effectively why the 'perfect crime' can never be committed - the perpetrator will not be able to keep their mouth shut and so will drop themselves in it... the Sky tower must fall at some point

nope, the world has changed, people get so used to insulting people from the safety of the chair supporting their big fat ar$es that they forget that there can be consequences when done IRL. the old maxim that 'most bullies are cowards' is magnified 100 fold when it comes to social media.

Interesting perspective but imagine if Porte gets popped in the next year or two, who was the bully then? The guy saying doper or Porte? A bit like the Kimmage / Armstrong situation but not on quite so toxic level.

I would actually maintain the whole thing was another Porte fairytale story.

It would be rich if Porte gets popped. But, we've had a few guys leave Sky at this point with no one testing positive. How many of the departed have won something since is another question. I believe there's a thread about at least one of them.

Funny how he's followed the "end of contract" pattern with a spectacular performance recovery.

Rogers tested positive for clenbuterol at Saxo.

Said it was due to contaminated meat and all was golden. Long live double standards.

Richie is sick - Nicholas Portal just interviewed and says for the mountain stages all good, no crashes, apart from Richie being a little sick.

So the excuses are starting for Porte dropping off the back.
