It's eastern powerhouse.
You're right, we've seen a massive number of top level Belarussian cyclists in recent years.
Quality you can't find anywhere east of Berlin.
Quantity is another story.

Martin rode Quebec/Montreal. So it was hardly his first race after injury. But yeah, clearly not in top shape

He has been a level below his best all year. Only 1 ITT win at WT level.

If you would have told Dumoulin in advance that he would leave Dennis and Martin just behind him he would have been delighted.

Coppel is the real surprise though. I really did not in any way, shape or form see that coming.
With a lesser day of Dumoulin, Dennis and Martin I do not think Kiri and Malori are such surprises. But Coppel?

What a weird race. Can't remember any other TT where NONE of the top 3 favourites end up on the podium. Usually it's one of the most predictable races of the year.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Best performances this year : 7th at the Tour de Suisse TT (10" behind Malori, 44" behind Dumoulin) and 5th at the Vuelta TT (1" behind Kiryienka, 1'32" behind Dumoulin).

Biggest surprise: Tony Martin being so poor. I mean, what's his excuse?
Probably destroyed his knees doing 58x10 all his career :D
He rode a 58 chainring???!!!!
Actually noticed he was doing a lot higher cadence today than usual
Actually a 58 is not that uncommon anymore for specialists.
Dumoulin rode an 58x11 in Burgos ITT

I met a top TT rider a short time ago. He said the reason for a large chain ring is to get a high gear using a medium cog in the cluster resulting in the chain being as straight as possible thus minimizing friction.

All of the favorites performed under par, but they actually had a good TTT on Sunday. I wonder if they perhaps went too deep in the TTT ?

Malori was part of Movistar's line-up, they won the bronze.

Martin:

“I don’t have the right answers,” he said as he ground to a halt at the finish, with the press just as stunned as he was.

“From the start and in the first eight kilometres I felt okay and that I had the power but when I entered the tailwind section I quickly lost my rhythm. It was too fast for me and I couldn’t handle the RPM and I didn’t expect this. Then on the uphill sections I couldn’t find my rhythm and I lost morale. I couldn’t get it back and it wasn’t my day. For the second half of the race it was more of a mental problem than a physical one.”

Britain still haven't named a replacement for Cavendish. Not much prep time for anyone they do call up - that's unless they intend to take the bizarre step of voluntarily riding one man too few. Even if there's no-one who could animate the race, why not throw the last spot to some domestic rider who'd love the experience. Odd.

Is Wiggo still eligible to ride? No idea what kind of shape he is in but it would be funny as hell to see. That mini forum explosion when he attacked 50k out in Paris-Roubaix was classic.

Let us not forget that Kiryienka is not the
first Belarusian winner in Richmond. :)
