This probably handed Sagan the race:

“I think that I had maybe three guys,” Matthews told Cyclingnews when he was asked about the number of teammates who were with him inside the final kilometres.

“Heinrich Haussler and Simon Gerrans. Heinrich did a really good job trying to pull it back a bit on the climb but he was working all through the race for me to keep it together and keep me in position, so he didn’t really have much left in the end. Heinrich did a really good job today and kept himself out of trouble and put me in the perfect position, which is a really hard job to do. I’m really grateful for that.”

When asked if Gerrans had helped him, he replied: “No, I think we were sprinting against each other unfortunately. We had two leaders so it is was it is.”

Matthews apparently not happy Gerrans didn't work for him.

Edit: Omg, beaten to the bunch by a Gerrans esque wheelsucker!

I'm not sure Italy even had a plan. I was expecting Nibali to try something but they just never did anything.

Nizzolo finished somewhere on the end of group with 3´´ behind Sagan, it was useless if it was planned to get him into bunch sprint he probably had no chance to win it but obviously noone else from Italian team when viviani decided to try it with breakaway but to be honest it was not really suitable course for the, they need somethink more selective vith current riders quality

Terrible tactics from the Australians. Had big numbers going into the last lap, one the late break was caught they should have strung out the peleton so that Sagan wasn't able to go over the first hill.

So frustrating to watch.

Sagan did some controversial stuff in the past, and to my knowledge he has suffered the consequences. IMO there's no need to devalue Sagan's performances by digging up these incidents. And as far as social discussions go, other parts of the forum might be more appropriate

Poor Libertine. He will have to live with Sagan as WC.
My interest in cycling has been waning for a long time now. If you notice, more and more of my posts are on course design and historical cycling and less and less is on as-it-happens current cycling. This is another nail in the coffin.

Well, get used to rewriting your history books because you will be hearing about this guy for a while.

Advise, just stick to woman's cycling and your obsession with Katarzyna Niewiadoma, because you no longer have anything valuable to contribute to the current elite men peloton discussion.

Had Gerrans worked Matthews is probably World Champion.

No because at no point in the last kms were there any hesitation or waiting and it's not like Gerrans is a strong worker. It's only in super fantasy land that he would ever work at any point in any race, of course.

If what Matthews says is true I'm disappointed in Gerrans, but disappointed in Matthews as well for airing it in public.

Why shouldn't he air it in public? He hardly owes Gerrans the favour of silence. I have a sort of perverse respect for Gerrans deep felt conviction that it is immoral for him to take a pull for anyone, including himself, but he can hardly expect others to avoid mentioning it.

Don't be stupid. We all have riders we like or dislike, love or loathe. Sagan provides more reasons to love or hate him than most riders. Either way, anyone's attitude to one rider is hardly so important that it means they have nothing valuable to contribute to the discussion.

To be fair, Matthews is stating things in a neutral way. Yes, he'd have preferred to have sole leadership but they had two leaders and so it is what it is.

Gerrans has won monuments and all, but is he still better at any type of race than Matthews at this point? I'm not so sure.

He's still better at Fleche type finishes and will be until he retires.
