GC after stage 1

Froome
Yates +25"
Porte +35"
Quintana +36"
Majka +37"
Talansky +37"
D. Martin +37"
Bardet +39"
Aru +40"
Contador +42"
Fuglsang +42"
Meintjes +01'00"
Chaves +01'01"

So far so good.
Not a bad day indeed. Romain is right there in the mix...

Excellent performance from Bardet in my opinion.
Sky is as solid as usual. Mikel Nieve, Henao, Landa and super Thomas.
How to crack sky's luxury train?

Majka better TT-ing than Contador and Fuglsang. Something is gonna happen on stage 5 [;

Pretty huge for Romain and he probably won't lose as much as normally in Marseille as its the last ITT. This suddenly looks good for a podium, assuming he is super peaking which he should be considering his season so far.

Stay on your bike Romain and upright.

He needs to keep upright.

With his build, taking a tumble is not on.

Stay upright dude, and then wait for stage 9...try something there.

Very promising result! He was right there with the stage favorites while the stage profile was not his cup of tea. Looks in podium form. :)

GC situation so far:

Froome
Thomas +12"
Aru +14"
Martin +25"
Porte +39"
Yates +43"
Bardet +47"
Contador +52"
Quintana +54"
Majka +01'01"

Good showing today, I think. Also considering he may still be feeling effects of crashing earlier in the week. I am cautiously hopeful.

Good show as expect.
But nowhere close to a GC winner. Top 5 is Bardet achievable target.

Aru performs super good today. He was super in national championship also. Let see whether he could maintain this level. If yes, no podium for Bardet.

If Porte doesn't up his level, I'm optimistic.

Way too early to tell IMO. It was the first real climb and sometimes legs respond in a weird way. Assuming that Froome and Porte have no bad luck and finish in Paris, they're the two strongest riders. The third spot is wide open though, even if Aru looks very strong.

Today Romain managed to pretty much finishwith Froome/Porte, took time on other rivals, Contador/Quintana and Birdsong/Bauke, so it's not bad a start.

Even this coming Sunday , it will be too early to draw conclusions. The battle for a podium spot will come down to the third week.

Biggest question mark about the 3rd spot is how much time will he lose to Aru in the ITT. If < 1 minute, then he'll have a chance, but he'll need to use his descending skills in stages like the sunday one.

Re:

Great and brave ride.
Hat off.
Beautiful, exciting ride. But the result cannot reflect his ride.
No way to beat Froome, especailly when Porte crashed and Aru is just care about 2nd place.

Lmao to those who thought pinot is in the same league of bardet.
Such a shame his time trial is very poor

Two very different riders. While I agree that Bardet > Pinot, this Tour parcours literally couldn't be more perfect for Bardet. Minimal time trialling and quite a few descent finishes

GC situation right now

1°) Christopher Froome
2°) Fabio Aru (+18")
3°) Romain Bardet (+51")
4°) Rigoberto Uran (+55")
5°) Jakob Fuglsang (+01'37")
6°) Daniel Martin (+01'44")
7°) Simon Yates (+02'02")
8°) Nairo Quintana (+02'13")
9°) Mikel Landa (+03'06")
10°) George Bennett (+03'53")
Contador distanced, Porte out.

As highlighted today, Romain faces a problem: Astana is willing to work with the strongest rider in order to secure a podium spot. It sounds very harsh but he's rid of Richie Porte and that's good news for his ambitions.

Yeah he's brave but problem is he's not strong enough uphill. He was the fifth climber on the Chat, and to put froome in trouble attacking only downhill is not enough to win the TdF
